Yes — safe in moderation
Yes — cooked eggs are an excellent protein source for dogs. Serve them boiled or scrambled plain, never raw, and watch the portion size.
Eggs are close to a perfect protein, with all essential amino acids plus riboflavin, selenium and biotin-friendly nutrients. They’re a common ingredient in quality dog foods and a gentle option for dogs recovering from stomach upset. Cook them through: raw eggs carry salmonella risk (for both dog and household), and raw egg white contains avidin, which blocks biotin absorption if fed regularly. Plain is key — no butter, salt, onion or chives.
One egg a day is fine for a large dog; half an egg or less suits small breeds — an egg is ~70 kcal, which is a lot in a chihuahua’s budget. Eggs should complement a complete diet, not replace it. Crushed cooked eggshell is sometimes used as a calcium supplement, but only do that under veterinary guidance.
Plain cooked chicken, turkey or white fish offer similar lean protein. See also cheese for occasional rewards.
