Ragdoll Cat Breed Guide - Temperament, Health and Genetics
The trait that named the breed has no source we could find. The cardiac genetics, by contrast, are documented in detail. Here is both, separated.

The name is a claim, and the claim has no source
Ragdolls are named for going limp when picked up. Every profile of the breed repeats it, usually in the first sentence, often with an explanation attached about muscle tone or about the founding cat.
We went looking for a study, a veterinary reference, a breed club measurement, anything. We did not find one. What exists is a great deal of confident repetition and a founding story that is itself contested. That does not mean Ragdolls are not relaxed when handled. Plenty clearly are. It means the trait that gives the breed its name has not, as far as we can find, been documented by anyone in a way that can be checked.
Say that out loud and the rest of the breed profile genre starts to look shakier too, which is why this page leads with what is actually documented: the cardiac genetics, which are unusually well characterised, and what they do and do not tell a buyer.
What is genuinely established about this breed
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine names hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as the most common heart disease of cats, and lists the Ragdoll among the breeds with higher prevalence, alongside the Maine Coon, British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Sphynx, Bengal, Chartreux, Norwegian Forest, Siberian and Persian.
Cornell describes the condition as one in which the muscular walls of the heart thicken, reducing the heart’s efficiency and sometimes producing effects elsewhere in the body. It states that diagnosis is by echocardiography, using sound waves to image the heart and show the thickened walls and reduced volume of the left ventricle.
For the Ragdoll specifically, a variant has been identified and made testable. Langford Vets, which runs feline genetic testing at the University of Bristol, offers a Ragdoll hypertrophic cardiomyopathy test for a variant in the MYBPC3 gene designated R820W. Langford describes these mutations as causing amino acid changes within the cardiac myosin binding protein, believed to alter the protein’s structure and function.
The survival figures, and what they actually say
This is where the Ragdoll page differs from every other cat breed page on this site, because the numbers Langford publishes are unusually specific and unusually sobering, and they need reading carefully rather than quoting in a panic.
Langford reports that over half of the Ragdolls homozygous for the mutation, meaning carrying two copies, did not survive five years. In the same account it reports that about 20 per cent of homozygous cats were still alive at around twelve years of age, and it uses that figure to make a specific point: this indicates the incomplete penetrance of the mutation.
Both halves of that matter. The first half is why the test exists and why breeder paperwork is not optional. The second half is why a homozygous result is not a death sentence and should not be read as one. A fifth of cats with the worst genotype reaching twelve is not a rounding error, it is evidence that the variant is one input among several that nobody has fully mapped.
A heterozygous cat, carrying one copy, sits at intermediate risk with better survival than a homozygous cat. A heterozygous cat bred to a cat without the variant has a 50 per cent probability of passing it on, which is the arithmetic that makes breeder testing meaningful rather than symbolic.
And the caveat Langford attaches to both of its feline cardiac tests applies here too: it is possible that some cats may go on to develop cardiac disease due to other, as yet unidentified genetic mutations. Cornell puts the same point differently, noting that not all cats with these mutations will develop the condition, and advising that screening results should be interpreted carefully with the guidance of a veterinary professional. That is exactly the position this page takes. We will not interpret a result for you.

All of the above converts into a short, specific conversation. A breeder who has done the work will find these questions unremarkable. One who has not will find them rude, which is itself the answer.
Ask for the R820W result for both parents, in writing, naming the laboratory and the cats. Ask what the breeder does with heterozygous cats in the breeding programme, because the 50 per cent transmission figure means that decision is where the breed’s future is actually determined. Ask whether either parent has had an echocardiogram, and by whom, since Cornell is clear that echocardiography is how the condition is diagnosed and DNA testing is not a substitute for it. Ask what happened to previous litters, and be alert to vagueness.
Then ask yourself the question that decides everything: if the paperwork does not appear, will you actually walk out? Everything on this page is only useful to someone who will.
Lifespan, without invention
Breed pages quote lifespan figures with no source attached. The best available UK data comes from Teng, Brodbelt, Church and O’Neill, published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2024, using 7,936 cats under primary veterinary care.
Life expectancy at age zero for UK companion cats overall was 11.7 years. Female cats had a 1.33 year advantage over males at age zero. Purebred status was among the factors associated with a shorter life expectancy, as was non ideal bodyweight in either direction. The breed specific figures reported in the summary we read spanned 14.4 years for Burmese and Birman cats down to 6.8 years for Sphynx.
Ragdoll was not among the breeds individually reported in that summary, so we are not printing a Ragdoll figure. Anyone who does print one without a citation is guessing, and given what the cardiac data shows about the spread of outcomes within this breed, an average would be misleading even if we had one.
Living with one
Semi longhaired coat, large frame, and a reputation for tolerating handling. Take the reputation as a hypothesis rather than a specification, because individual variation within a cat breed is larger than the average difference between breeds, and a page cannot tell you what the animal in front of you is like.
What is safe to say is that a cat which does tolerate handling is a cat that is easier to groom, easier to get into a carrier, and easier for a vet to examine, and those three things compound over a lifetime. Whether your particular cat is that cat is something you establish by watching it, and pet body language is more useful for that than any breed description.
The relaxed reputation carries one risk worth naming. A cat that does not object to being handled is a cat whose objections are easy to miss, including a cat that is unwell. If your Ragdoll is quiet, ask yourself periodically whether it is quiet in the way it has always been quiet, or quiet in a new way. What we could not source
Three claims appear on nearly every Ragdoll page and none of them survived a search.
That Ragdolls go limp when picked up because of low muscle tone. Widely stated, no reference found.
That Ragdolls do not feel pain normally, or have a high pain threshold. This one is worth naming explicitly because it is potentially harmful. We found nothing supporting it, and an owner who believes it may delay a phone call. Treat any change in your cat exactly as you would in any other cat.
That the breed is inherently unsuited to going outdoors because of its temperament. Indoor versus outdoor is a real debate with real evidence on both sides and it is covered at indoor versus outdoor cats. The breed specific version of the claim, we could not source.
