Short answer: feeding, insuring, vaccinating and licensing the same healthy 20 kg dog costs about $289 a year in India and about $1,769 in Australia — a 6× gap for identical care. Insurance, not food, drives most of it: it is the single biggest line in 8 of the 12 most expensive countries.

What the numbers mean

Insurance is the swing factor. Sweden and Australia insure heavily and premiums show it (Hedvig’s insured-Labrador average is 376 kr/mo; Australia’s market average is A$127/mo). In India and Ireland, cover is cheap but thin. Food prices vary less than you’d think — $231–$933 a year — and the extremes are driven by which mid-range brand dominates each market. Dog taxes are a European specialty: Berlin charges €120 a year and Zurich CHF 160, while France and Italy abolished theirs decades ago and the UK hasn’t licensed dogs since 1987.

Methodology & sources

Reference case: a healthy adult ~20 kg dog. Food = a mid-range complete dry food from a named national retailer, at 110 kg/year (~300 g/day). Routine vet = one annual wellness exam plus core booster vaccinations, from published clinic price lists, national surveys or official fee schedules (Germany: GOT). Insurance = a typical accident-and-illness premium for a young medium dog from named insurers or comparison-site data. Licence = the statutory fee where one exists, using a named city where it varies locally. Local currency converted at ECB reference rates of 24 Jul 2026. All prices checked 27 July 2026 unless dated otherwise below.

Honest caveats: Australia’s insurance figure is a market-wide average (mixed ages and species), so a young dog can be cheaper. India’s “insurance” is a low-sum surgery/mortality product, not Western-style cover, and its licence enforcement is city-specific and patchy, so we show no licence figure. Japan’s licence line is the annual rabies shot + tag mandated by law (registration itself is a one-off ¥3,000). Brazil sells vet “health plans” rather than reimbursement insurance. Spain’s insurance number is range-based — the weakest datapoint in the set.

FAQ

How much does a dog cost per year?

For the recurring basics — food, routine vet, insurance, licence — between about $289 (India) and $1,769 (Australia) for a 20 kg dog. The US lands near $1,393, the UK near $683.

Why is Australia top?

Insurance. At the market-average A$127/month it is the highest premium in the set, and food is also expensive. A young, healthy dog can be insured for less than the average.

What’s excluded?

Buying the dog, gear, grooming, training, boarding, parasite prevention, dental and emergencies. This is the comparable baseline, not the whole bill — real totals run higher everywhere.
