Because the day of mating is not always the exact day of conception, any due-date estimate is a window rather than a fixed appointment — your vet can narrow it down with an examination or ultrasound, and confirm how many to expect with X-rays late in the pregnancy.
As the date approaches, set up a quiet, warm nesting area a week or two ahead so the mother can settle in. A classic sign that labour is near is a drop in body temperature below about 37 °C (99 °F) in the 24 hours before birth, along with restlessness and nesting behaviour. Know your nearest emergency vet in advance — most births go smoothly, but it is reassuring to have the number ready if something stalls.
