Dog and Cat Pregnancy Calculator - Read the Caveats

Expecting puppies or kittens? Enter the mating date to estimate when they are due, plus the normal range - so you know when to prepare the whelping or kittening area.

How long are dogs and cats pregnant?

Dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days from conception, though anywhere from 58 to 68 days is normal. Cats are pregnant for roughly 63 to 67 days, averaging around 65. Because the day of mating is not always the exact day of conception, any due-date estimate is a window rather than a fixed appointment - your vet can narrow it down with an examination or ultrasound, and confirm how many to expect with X-rays late in the pregnancy.

As the date approaches, set up a quiet, warm nesting area a week or two ahead so the mother can settle in. A classic sign that labour is near is a drop in body temperature below about 37 Â°C (99 Â°F) in the 24 hours before birth, along with restlessness and nesting behaviour. Know your nearest emergency vet in advance - most births go smoothly, but it is reassuring to have the number ready if something stalls.

This tool gives general estimates only and is not veterinary advice. Always consult your vet about your individual pet. Full disclaimer.

Why the date you wrote on the calendar is the weakest number here

Every due date calculator on the internet, including the one above, asks for the date of mating. The best source we could find says that is close to the worst input you could choose.

The MSD Veterinary Manual entry on breeding management of bitches, read on 4 August 2026, puts it directly: “Fresh canine semen can live in the vagina for 9+ days, explaining why breedings occurring even before the fertile window can result in conception.” And then, without hedging, “Breeding dates do not correlate with whelping dates closely as actual ovulation does.”

Read those two sentences together and the arithmetic falls apart. A mating on the third of the month can produce a conception on the twelfth. Count sixty-three days from either and you get two different answers, and only one of them is about the puppies.

This is not a flaw in the calculator. It is a flaw in the question. The calculator is doing correct arithmetic on a date that does not mean what people think it means.

The dates that do correlate, and where they come from

The same MSD entry gives two anchors that behave much better than a mating date.

AnchorWhat MSD publishesRead
The LH peak“Parturition terminates pregnancy 64-66 days after the LH peak.”4 Aug 2026
The first day of dioestrus, established by vaginal cytologyFollowing cytological results to the first day of dioestrus “enables calculation of the due dates (56-58 days later) with accuracy”.4 Aug 2026
How ovulation is timed“Chemiluminescent progesterone testing is considered the gold standard”, using “serial blood samples taken every 2 days”, with “daily serial measurement of LH” to identify the surge.4 Aug 2026

Notice that both usable anchors require something done in a clinic. A blood test every two days, or a smear read under a microscope. Neither is something an owner can supply to a web form, which is exactly why web forms ask for the mating date instead.

So the honest way to use the tool above is as a rough bracket rather than a date. If you need a date you can plan around, the person who can give you one is your vet, and the reason is that they can measure the thing the calculator can only guess at.

What a due date is actually for

It is worth asking why anybody needs the date at all, because the answer changes what precision is worth.

For most people the date is emotional. It is a thing to tell the family and count down to. For that purpose a bracket is fine and the calculator above is fine.

For a smaller number of people the date is operational. It determines when somebody needs to be in the house, when the vet should be on notice, and when a long weekend away is a bad idea. For that purpose the difference between a mating-date estimate and an ovulation-date estimate can be the better part of a week, and a week is the difference between being there and not being there.

If you are in the second group, that is the conversation to have with your vet now rather than in the last fortnight. The gold-standard timing MSD describes has to be done before and around the mating, not afterwards. Once the moment has passed, no amount of arithmetic recovers it.

The risk nobody puts on a due date page

A countdown makes birth feel like a scheduled event. The published data on canine births suggests something more variable, and the numbers are specific enough to be worth knowing before rather than during.

O’Neill and colleagues studied 18,758 entire bitches across 50 UK first-opinion emergency-care practices, published in Veterinary Record in 2017, which we read via RCVS Knowledge on 4 August 2026. They recorded 701 cases of dystocia, a prevalence of 3.7 per cent.

FactorWhat the study found
BreedingPurebred dogs had 3.4 times greater odds of dystocia than crossbreds.
BreedFrench Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs and Chihuahuas showed the highest odds compared with crossbreds. The Toy group had the highest odds of any Kennel Club breed group.
Size, smallBitches under 10.0 kg had 1.6 times the odds compared with the 20.0 to 29.9 kg reference group.
Size, largeBitches of 40.0 to 49.9 kg had 3.5 times the odds compared with the same reference group.
Age“Bitches aged between 3.0-5.9 years old had over three times the odds of dystocia compared with bitches under three years old.”

Three point seven per cent sounds small until it is your dog, and the breed effect is large enough that an average is misleading for many of the animals people actually keep. If your dog is in one of the higher-odds groups, the useful thing is not a more precise due date. It is a plan agreed with your vet in advance about what happens if the birth does not go as expected, and a clear idea of where you would go at three in the morning.

We are not going to describe signs of a difficult birth or what to do about them. That is a clinical judgement made by somebody looking at the animal, and a paragraph on a web page written weeks earlier is not a substitute. Our page on what to have ready before you ring the vet covers the part we can help with.

Cats, and an honest gap

This tool covers cats as well as dogs, and we owe you a straight statement about the difference in evidence behind the two.

For dogs we have the MSD figures above and the O’Neill dystocia data. For cats we could not obtain a gestation figure from a source of that standard on the day we wrote this. The MSD entry on breeding management of queens, read on 4 August 2026, does not state a gestation length in the material we could reach. What it does say is that in cats “ovulation is induced by vaginal-cervical stimulation”, so “multiple breedings over 2-3 days are advised”, and that pregnancy can be evaluated “by abdominal palpation and ultrasonography 21-30 days after breeding, which permits evaluation of fetal viability and normalcy”.

Induced ovulation matters more than it sounds. In a species where ovulation is triggered by mating rather than happening on a schedule, the interval between mating and conception is different in kind from the canine situation, and a calculator built on canine assumptions is on even shakier ground.

So for cats: use the tool as a very rough bracket, and take the twenty-one to thirty day ultrasound window from MSD as the thing that turns a guess into information. We would rather tell you we could not source the number than print one we found on a content farm.

What we could not source

A feline gestation length from a veterinary reference of the standard we use elsewhere on this site. Named above rather than quietly filled in.

Any published week-by-week development timeline for either species. These are everywhere online and we could not trace one to a source we were willing to cite.

Any figure for how far actual whelping dates spread around a predicted one. MSD says breeding dates correlate poorly and gives an accurate alternative, but we found no published distribution of the error.

Anything about feeding, supplements or exercise during pregnancy. There is none of that on this page, deliberately. Those are questions for the vet who is seeing the animal, and getting them wrong in either direction does real harm.

Anything about the birth itself. No stages, no timings, no intervention points. That is a deliberate refusal, not an omission we forgot to fill.

Printable: the questions worth asking at the first appointment

If a pregnancy is planned or suspected, these are the things that are useful to have written down before you are sitting in the consulting room. They are questions, not answers, and every one of them is for your vet.

Once there are puppies or kittens in the house, the first thirty days with a puppy and the first thirty days with a kitten pick up where this page stops, and the puppy and kitten tracker is the printable version. The puppy weight predictor and the pet age calculator deal with the other arithmetic people want. For the money side, see the vet costs guide and the pet insurance guide, and note that insurers treat pregnancy and whelping differently from ordinary illness. If something goes wrong, pet emergency and pet first aid are the pages to have open, and the pet care plan helps you write the household version down.
