Multiply by seven is wrong, and it is wrong in an interesting way
The seven-year rule fails not because the ratio is off but because there is no single ratio. Dogs do most of their ageing at the start, and the rate slows afterwards. A conversion that uses one multiplier for the whole of life has to be wrong at both ends.
The clearest illustration comes from the National Institute on Aging’s summary of a study that compared DNA methylation patterns in dogs and humans. On that comparison, an eight-week-old puppy is about the age of a nine-month-old baby, and a twelve-year-old Labrador is about the age of a seventy-year-old adult (National Institute on Aging, read 4 August 2026).
Put those two side by side. In its first eight weeks a puppy covers nine months of human development. Multiply-by-seven would call that fourteen weeks. The rule is not slightly wrong at the start, it is wrong by a factor of three.
The formula, and its actual limits
Researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute describe the same work and give the conversion explicitly: human age equals 16 multiplied by the natural logarithm of the dog’s age, plus 31 (National Human Genome Research Institute, read 4 August 2026).
A logarithm is exactly the right shape for this. It rises steeply and then flattens, which is what dog ageing does.
Now the limits, which almost nobody publishing that formula mentions. The study analysed 104 Labrador retrievers, from puppies to sixteen years of age, and compared their methylation patterns against human data. One breed. The NIA’s own note is that future work involves testing the formula with other dog breeds, which is a polite way of saying it has not yet been tested on them.
That matters more than usual, because of the one thing everybody already knows about dog ageing.
Size changes everything, and the formula does not know your dog’s size
Dr Elaine Ostrander of the NHGRI frames the general picture: “Dogs experience the same biological hallmarks of aging as humans, but do so in a compressed period, around 10 to 15 years on average, versus over 70 years in humans.”
The size effect is acknowledged in the same place. Ostrander notes that it would be particularly interesting to study long-lived breeds, “a disproportionate number of which are small in size”, against breeds with shorter lifespans, which includes many larger ones.
So there is a well-recognised relationship between body size and longevity in dogs, and the tidy logarithmic formula was derived from a single medium-to-large breed. Any calculator, ours included, that returns a single number for a chihuahua and a great dane of the same age is smoothing over the most important variable in the question.
That is why the tool above works from life stages rather than pretending to a precision it does not have, and it is why the number it gives you should be read as a rough position on a curve rather than an age.
Cats are a separate question with a separate answer
Almost every dog-ageing article quietly assumes cats work the same way. They are studied differently and the veterinary profession has settled on life stages rather than a conversion.
The 2021 AAHA and AAFP feline life stage guidelines define four age-related stages: kitten, “from birth up to 1 year”; young adult, “from 1 year through 6 years”; mature adult, “from 7 to 10 years”; and senior, “aged over 10 years”, with an end-of-life stage that can occur at any age (AAHA and AAFP, feline life stage definitions, read 4 August 2026).
The guidelines are unusually honest about what those boundaries are worth: “any age groupings are inevitably arbitrary demarcations along a spectrum and not absolutes”. The task force chose the grouping partly because it “is consistent with how pet caregivers generally perceive their cat’s maturation and aging process”, and it is intended as a basis for an individualised lifelong healthcare strategy rather than as a conversion table.
The practical upshot for a cat owner is that the number in human years is a curiosity, and the life stage is the thing that changes what your vet wants to look at.
Why anybody should care about the number at all
The honest answer is that the human-years figure is mostly entertainment. The life stage is not.
What changes with life stage is the kind of attention an animal needs, the frequency and content of veterinary checks, what counts as a normal amount of sleep or activity, and how seriously to take a small change. A seven-year-old cat has moved into mature adult, and that is the point at which the profession starts looking for things it was not looking for at three. A large-breed dog at seven is in a very different position from a terrier at seven.
That is the useful conversion: not dog years to human years, but chronological age to the questions worth asking. It is also the conversion that no calculator can do for you, because it depends on the individual animal.

When to ring rather than wait for the next check
Age is not an illness, and “he’s just getting old” is the sentence that delays more veterinary visits than any other.
Ring your vet if an older animal has changed in any of these ways: drinking more or less, eating more or less, losing or gaining weight without a change in food, toileting more often or in new places, straining, or having accidents indoors. If it is sleeping in new places, hiding, or has stopped using somewhere it always used, like a favourite chair it can no longer jump to. If it is stiff, slow to rise, reluctant on stairs or on slippery floors, or has changed how it moves. If grooming has stopped, or the coat has changed. If it seems confused, restless at night, or is vocalising when it did not before. If breathing has changed at all. If there is any new lump, or a lump that has changed.
