My dog ate chocolate — is it dangerous? Estimate the risk in seconds by weight, chocolate type and amount.
Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant dogs metabolise far more slowly than humans. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine: cocoa powder and baking chocolate are 5–10× more dangerous than milk chocolate, while white chocolate contains almost none. Doses above roughly 20 mg per kg of body weight cause symptoms; above 60 mg/kg can be life-threatening.
Symptoms usually appear within 6–12 hours: vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst, restlessness, fast heart rate, tremors. This calculator is a triage aid, not a diagnosis — when in doubt, call your vet or an emergency clinic immediately. Keep the packaging so the vet knows the cocoa content.
