Is Snake Plant Poisonous to Pets - Saponins and Haemolysis

One word in the source material makes this plant worth more than a shrug, and it is a word ASPCA does not use. It is in the next section.

Yes. Both authorities we read list it as toxic to dogs and cats. Where they differ is on how far the illness can go, and that difference is the reason to read on rather than stop at the yes.

The word ASPCA does not use

ASPCA's entry is short and reassuringly domestic. It gives Sansevieria trifasciata in the family Agavaceae, with the common names "Golden Bird's Nest, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, Good Luck Plant", marks it "Toxic to Dogs, Toxic to Cats", names the toxic principle as "Saponins", and lists the signs as "Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea." Merck's table of poisonous houseplants and ornamentals says something more specific. It describes "hemolytic saponin and organic acids found in leaves and flowers", and lists "vomiting, salivation, diarrhea, and hemolysis". Read 4 August 2026.

Haemolysis is the destruction of red blood cells. It is not a worse version of an upset stomach, it is a different category of event, and it is invisible from a sofa. An animal breaking down red cells does not look like an animal breaking down red cells until it looks like something else entirely.

We are not going to referee this. Merck is a clinical reference with a toxicology chapter and ASPCA runs a poison control service handling household calls, and the two are written for different readers with different purposes. The safe way to hold both is that the common outcome is probably the gut one both sources agree on, and the reason to ring is the one only Merck names.

What a saponin is, in plain terms

Saponins are plant compounds that behave a bit like detergent. The name comes from soap, and they foam in water for the same reason soap does: one end of the molecule likes water and the other end likes fat. That is a useful mental model, because it explains both halves of the sign list at once.

A detergent like compound sitting on the lining of a gut irritates it, which gives you the vomiting, drooling and diarrhoea that both sources list. The same property, applied to a red blood cell membrane, is what the word haemolytic in Merck's phrase is pointing at. Merck attaches that adjective specifically here, and does not attach it to the saponins it discusses elsewhere, which is a small editorial choice worth noticing.

Merck also names organic acids alongside the saponin, without specifying which. Neither source we read went further, so neither will we.

The naming problem, which is the practical hazard

Snake plant collects nicknames, and one of them belongs to a completely different and considerably nastier plant.

ASPCA lists "Mother-in-Law's Tongue" as a common name for Sansevieria. Dumb cane, Dieffenbachia, is called mother in law plant in many households. Merck's table treats Dieffenbachia separately and describes calcium oxalate crystals along with toxic proteins, producing "immediate intense pain" in the mouth and throat, vomiting and dyspnoea, which is difficulty breathing. Those are two entirely different emergencies. One is a saponin story with a gut and blood cell mechanism. The other is a mechanical and inflammatory injury to the mouth and airway that begins immediately. If you ring a vet and say mother in law's something, you may be describing the wrong plant.

Why we keep saying photograph it. Plant identification is the single biggest source of avoidable error in these calls, and it is the one thing a household can fix in five seconds. A photograph beats a name, because a name is a memory and a photograph is evidence. Take one of the whole plant and one of the chewed part.

Where the snake plant sits in a house, and why that matters

This is a plant sold on the promise that it survives neglect, which means it ends up in the places nobody visits: hallways, spare rooms, the corner behind a door, the top of a bookcase. That is a genuinely different risk profile from a plant on a kitchen windowsill.

The consequence is not that the exposure is more likely. It is that the exposure is less likely to be witnessed. A cat that chews a leaf in an unused room does it unobserved, and the first thing the household sees is an animal that is unwell for no apparent reason, hours later and two rooms away. If you have snake plants and an animal that has become unwell without explanation, the plants are worth checking for damage before you conclude there is no explanation.

The leaves also help you here. A snake plant leaf is thick and stiff, and a bite leaves an obvious notch that does not close up or wilt away. Unlike a soft leaved plant, it keeps the evidence.

What we could not source

  • How much matters. Neither source gave any threshold, and Merck does not name a toxic dose for this plant in what we read. That is not an invitation to estimate.
  • Onset timing. Nothing. No window from either source.
  • How common haemolysis actually is. Merck lists it. Merck does not say whether it is typical or exceptional. That gap is real and we are not closing it with a guess.
  • Roots and rhizomes. Merck names leaves and flowers. Neither source addressed the underground parts, which a digging animal could reach.
  • Rabbits, birds and small mammals. ASPCA names dogs and cats. Merck does not restrict but gives no detail. No read across.
  • Whether the plant is genuinely an air purifier. Irrelevant to toxicity, widely believed, and not something either veterinary source addressed. It has no bearing on this page either way.

Questions people actually ask

ASPCA only lists nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Is Merck overstating it?

We do not think either is wrong, and we are not going to pretend to know which is more representative. They are different documents with different jobs. A poison control entry is written to help a call handler triage the common case. A toxicology chapter is written to tell a clinician the full range. Carrying both is the only honest option.

My cat licked a leaf rather than eating it. Does that count?

Neither source distinguished licking from chewing, so we cannot give you a sourced difference. What we can say is that the sources also give you no threshold at all, which means there is nothing to compare a lick against. Ring and describe it accurately.

Is the snake plant one of the worse houseplants?

Merck puts it in a saponin group with a blood cell component, which is a more serious mechanism than the sap irritation it describes for poinsettia, and a less serious one than the heart involvement it describes for oleander. That is a rough ordering of mechanisms, not a league table, and it should not be used to decide whether to ring.

Should I get rid of the plant?

That is your decision and we are not going to make it for you. What we will say is that the useful question is not whether the plant is toxic, which is settled, but whether your particular animal chews plants. Some do and some never have. A vet who knows your animal is better placed to help you think that through than a page is.

Does a dead or dried leaf still count?

Neither source addressed dried material for this plant. Compare oleander, where Merck says explicitly fresh or dry. The absence here is a gap in the evidence, not a finding.
