What to do in the first hours a pet goes missing

Most lost pets are found close to home and soon after they vanish, so acting fast makes a real difference. Search your immediate area calling their name in a calm voice, and bring something familiar - a favourite squeaky toy, or their food. Cats in particular often hide nearby rather than run, so check under cars, sheds and dense bushes. Then widen out: print a stack of these posters and put them where people pause - vet clinics, the entrances of parks, shops, and busy junctions near where your pet was last seen.

At the same time, work the phones and the web: call local vets and shelters, report the loss on neighbourhood and lost-pet groups on social media, and - crucially - contact your microchip company to flag your pet as missing and confirm your contact details are current. A clear photo and a big, readable phone number are the two things that get a poster noticed, which is exactly what this tool puts front and centre.

Tip: microchip your pet and keep the registry details up to date - it is the single most reliable way lost pets get home. A collar tag with your number helps even faster.

The finding that should be at the top of every page like this one

We build a poster tool, so this is an awkward thing for us to lead with, and it is the most useful sentence we can give you: in the only substantial study we could find, a poster is not among the ways most lost animals came home. Not the leading method for dogs, not the leading method for cats, and not listed as its own category at all.

We are still going to make you a poster, and further down we say why. But if you have found this page in the first hour of a search, the honest thing we can do is tell you what the numbers say before you spend that hour at a printer.

The study, named and dated

Weiss, Slater and Lord, Frequency of Lost Dogs and Cats in the United States and the Methods Used to Locate Them, in Animals, volume 2, issue 2, pages 301 to 315, 2012, published by MDPI. Read at source on 5 August 2026.

The method: a cross sectional national random digit dial telephone survey run in the United States between September and November 2010, covering 1,015 households that had owned a dog or a cat within the previous five years. That breaks down to 817 dog owning households and 506 cat owning households.

How often animals go missing. Dogs lost: 14 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval 11 to 16). Cats lost: 15 per cent (95 per cent CI 12 to 18). Those two are close enough to be treated as the same number.

How often they came home. Dogs recovered: 93 per cent (95 per cent CI 86 to 97). Cats recovered: 75 per cent (95 per cent CI 64 to 85). Those two are not the same number, and the gap between them is the single most important thing on this page for anyone looking for a cat.

How they were actually found, by species

This is where the two species separate completely. The percentages below are of the animals that were successfully recovered.

Dogs, based on 101 recovered animals: a search of the neighbourhood, 49 per cent. Returned home on their own, 20 per cent. An identification tag or a microchip, 15 per cent. A neighbour brought the dog home, 7 per cent. Animal control, 6 per cent. Other, 4 per cent.

Cats, based on 54 recovered animals: returned home on their own, 59 per cent. A search of the neighbourhood, 30 per cent. A tag or a microchip, 2 per cent. Animal control, 2 per cent. Other, 7 per cent.

Three things fall out of those two lists and they are worth stating separately.

First, the dominant dog method costs nothing and takes no equipment. Half of the recovered dogs in that sample were found by somebody walking around the area. That is not a technology, a service or a purchase. It is the thing to do first.

Second, the dominant cat method is not a method at all. Nearly three in five recovered cats in that sample came back by themselves. A cat search is largely a matter of making return possible and being present when it happens, which is a very different activity from a dog search.

Third, identification did far more for dogs than for cats, at 15 per cent against 2 per cent in that sample. We are not going to tell you what to do about that, because it is a decision with a vet and an owner in it and not a website. What we can say is that the gap is in the published record and most pages on this subject do not mention it.

How much weight those numbers can carry

We would rather you knew the weak points than found them later.

The subsamples are small. The method percentages above rest on 101 recovered dogs and 54 recovered cats. A single percentage point in the cat column is well under one animal. Treat the cat figures as a shape rather than as precise values: returned on its own is clearly the largest category and identification is clearly a small one, and the difference between 2 per cent and 7 per cent in that table is one or two households.

It is one country and one period. A United States telephone survey conducted between September and November 2010. Housing density, road layout, the presence of animal control services, whether cats are typically allowed outdoors and what identification is normal all vary enormously between the countries this site serves. We found nothing equivalent for most of them.

It predates the way people now search. A survey run in 2010 cannot capture neighbourhood social media groups, lost pet apps or the practice of posting a photograph to a local page, all of which are now the first thing many owners do. We could not find a study that measures any of those, searched on 5 August 2026. It is entirely possible that the modern equivalent of the 49 per cent neighbourhood search is partly a digital neighbourhood, and nobody appears to have measured it.

It is recall. Owners were asked about events that had already happened, which means the losses that ended badly and the losses people would rather not describe are both liable to be reported differently from the ones that ended well.

Then why does this page still make a poster

Three reasons, all of them honest.

Because the study measured how animals were found, not what owners did. A poster that prompts a neighbour to look in their garage and then walk the dog home is recorded in that table as a neighbour brought it home, or as a neighbourhood search. The categories are outcomes and not causes, and no design of survey like this can separate them. That cuts both ways: it means we cannot claim the poster helped, and it means the table does not prove it did not.

Because a poster is the artefact that makes a neighbourhood search possible. Half of the recovered dogs came home via somebody covering the area. A sheet of paper with a clear photograph, a description and a telephone number is how you turn one person walking around into fifty people who know what to look for.

Because it costs nothing and it works when nothing else does. No account, no signal, no battery, no service that can be discontinued. That is the same reasoning behind our printable vet call card and the printable emergency pack: paper is the thing that still works at two in the morning.

What we will not do is print a claim that posters recover a given percentage of animals. That number is quoted in a great many places. We could not find a study behind it in any of them.

What the evidence says about what you have already done

Tick anything you have done. Each opens to say what the published record says about that step, including where it says nothing. This is plain CSS, nothing is sent anywhere, and it does not score you.

The largest single category for dogs in the 2012 study, at 49 per cent of recovered dogs, and the second largest for cats at 30 per cent. Of everything on this list it is the step with the most direct support, and it needs nothing but time.Then the biggest category is one you cannot perform. 59 per cent of recovered cats in that sample returned on their own. Recovery was also lower for cats overall, 75 per cent against 93 per cent for dogs. Being present, and making a return route and a way in possible, is doing something even when it does not feel like it.Fifteen per cent of recovered dogs and two per cent of recovered cats in that sample were located through a tag or a microchip. The dog figure is substantial. The cat figure is one or two households out of fifty four, which tells you how thin that part of the table is.Six per cent for dogs, two per cent for cats in the recovered groups. Smaller than most owners expect, and it is still a category where somebody else is holding your animal and can only reach you if you have made contact.Not measured by any study we could find. The 2012 survey predates it. This is the largest gap in the evidence on this page, and anybody quoting a success rate for social media recovery should be asked where it came from.Not a category in the study, which is exactly why this page says so. A poster that leads to a neighbour walking your dog home is recorded under a different heading. We cannot claim it helped and the table does not show that it did not.Then stop reading this page. What makes a poster readable, and what we are guessing about

The tool above lays out a sheet. The choices behind that layout are ours, and here is the honest status of each one: none of them is based on a published study of poster design for lost animals, because we could not find one.

What we have done instead is apply the ordinary constraints of something read at a distance, in bad light, by somebody who is not looking for it. A large photograph, because a description of a brown dog identifies a large fraction of all dogs. A small number of words, because a sheet of paragraphs is a sheet nobody reads. A telephone number in the largest type on the page, because that is the one piece of information a passer by needs to take away. High contrast, because posters live on lamp posts in the rain.

Those are design principles, not findings, and we are labelling them as such. The same distinction between a plausible inference and a measured result runs through the litter tray evidence page and is set out in general on poison control directory.

What the numbers imply about the order you do things in

We are not going to give you a search plan, because the evidence does not support one and because circumstances differ too much. What the 2012 figures do support is a comment about sequence, and it is worth one paragraph.

The two largest categories in that study, for both species, cost nothing and require no preparation: walking the area, and the animal returning by itself. Between them they account for roughly seven in ten recovered dogs and nearly nine in ten recovered cats in that sample. Everything else in the table, identification, animal control, a neighbour, is smaller, and most of it involves somebody else acting rather than you.

The practical reading is that the cheapest actions are also the ones the data associate most strongly with recovery, and that the things which feel productive because they involve typing or printing are not the ones with the strongest numbers beside them. A poster is worth making. It is worth making after you have been outside, not instead of going outside.

One more thing the table cannot tell you and that we are not going to invent: how any of this changes with time. The study reports whether animals came home, not how long it took or how the odds moved across the first day, the first week and the first month. That is the question owners actually ask on the second morning, and as far as we can establish nobody has published the answer.

What we could not source

  1. Any study of poster effectiveness in recovering a lost animal. Not one, in any country, in any period. The percentages quoted for this on the internet appear to have no published origin.
  2. Any study of poster design. Photograph size, wording, colour, placement, how long a poster stays useful. Nothing.
  3. Any measurement of online or social media recovery. The one substantial dataset predates the practice entirely.
  4. Anything comparable outside the United States. The loss and recovery rates above are one national survey from late 2010, and the factors that would move them differ enormously between countries.
  5. Any published figure for how long a search typically lasts, or for how recovery probability changes with each day that passes. That is the question every owner has on the second morning and we could not answer it from any source.
