Maine Coon Breed Guide - Size, Health and Living With One
The genetics of this breed are unusually well documented and unusually often glossed over. What to ask a breeder, and what a clear test does not mean.

The size question, and why it is the wrong first question
Almost everyone arrives at this breed through a photograph of an enormous cat draped over someone’s shoulder. Size is the hook. It is also the least useful thing to plan around, because the practical consequences of a large cat are mundane and the consequences of this breed’s genetics are not.
What a large, heavy, long coated cat actually changes in a household is furniture, litter trays, carriers, and how much cat hair ends up in your food. None of that is hard to solve and none of it should decide anything. What should decide things is the health picture below, which is unusually well documented for this breed and unusually often glossed over in breed profiles.
So this page is arranged the other way round from most. Health and provenance first, because those are the decisions you cannot undo. Temperament and daily life second, because those are the parts you can adapt to.
The genetics are the story, and they are better documented than most
Maine Coons are one of a small number of cat breeds where a specific inherited cardiac variant has been identified, named and made testable. That is a good thing. It also means the breed carries a set of facts that a buyer should understand before handing over money, and that most breed pages summarise badly.
The variant is in the MYBPC3 gene and is designated A31P. Langford Vets, which runs the feline genetic testing laboratory at the University of Bristol, developed a PCR assay for it and reports that the prevalence of the A31P mutation in the Maine Coon population is around 26 per cent.
Three details in Langford’s own wording matter enormously and are almost always dropped in translation.
First, risk is graded rather than binary. A cat carrying one mutated copy is described as being at greater risk of developing cardiac disease. A cat carrying two is described as thought likely to develop it. Those are different statements and the difference is the whole point of testing.
Second, the link is imperfect. Langford writes that the risk for homozygous cats appears to be greater than for heterozygous cats, but that this correlation is not perfect. Geneticists call this incomplete penetrance. In plain terms, carrying the variant is not a diagnosis and not carrying it is not a guarantee.
Third, and this is the sentence to remember: Langford notes it is possible that some cats may go on to develop cardiac disease due to other, as yet unidentified genetic mutations. A clear DNA test result does not mean a clear heart. It means one known variant has been excluded.
What you do with that information is a conversation with your own vet, not with us. We are not going to tell you what to screen, how often, or what any result means for your individual cat.
What responsible breeding actually requires
This is the part worth knowing before you contact a breeder, because it converts a vague instinct about reputability into specific questions.
The Maine Coon Cat Club, the UK breed club, sets out the testing regime that Governing Council of the Cat Fancy registered breeders are required to follow. It covers DNA testing for spinal muscular atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, with homozygous negative status required. White Maine Coons additionally require a negative BAER hearing test result, because deafness in this breed is associated with white coat colour and the dominant blue eye gene.
Ask to see those results. Ask for them in writing, in the parents’ names, from a named laboratory. A breeder who has done the work will produce them without irritation, because producing them is the reason the work was done.
The club also gives useful context on how common these problems actually are, which is the kind of proportion that gets lost when a list of scary conditions is published without any numbers next to it. It reports that the incidence of the SMA gene in Maine Coons registered with the GCCF in the UK is low, and that the reported incidence of hip dysplasia in the UK would appear to be very low. A long list of testable conditions is a sign of a breed being taken seriously, not a sign of a breed falling apart.
What the club lists, and what each thing means
The breed club names seven areas. Reproduced here as descriptions, with no interpretation added by us and nothing about treatment.
Obesity, which the club attributes to overfeeding, poor diet, insufficient exercise or metabolic causes. Mouth, teeth and gum problems including feline stomatitis and periodontal disease, described as involving inflamed and swollen gums, excessive drooling, bad breath and difficulty eating. Spinal muscular atrophy, described as a loss of neurons in the first few months of life leading to muscle weakness and atrophy that first becomes apparent at three to four months of age. Pyruvate kinase deficiency, which shortens red blood cell lifespan and causes anaemia. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, characterised by inward thickening of the heart muscle and a resulting reduction in chamber volume. Hip dysplasia, where the hip joint does not sit properly in the socket, leading to joint instability. And deafness, associated with white coat colour and the dominant blue eye gene.
If you are looking at these and wondering what to do about any of them, the answer is the same for all seven: ask your vet, who can examine your cat. We name conditions here because knowing the vocabulary makes you a better buyer and a better client. We do not tell you what to do about them, ever.
Lifespan, in context
Breed profiles quote lifespan ranges that appear to come from nowhere. There is a better source now.
Teng, Brodbelt, Church and O’Neill published life tables for UK cats in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2024, built from 7,936 cats under primary veterinary care that died across a defined window. Life expectancy at age zero for UK companion cats came out at 11.7 years overall. Female cats had a 1.33 year longer life expectancy than males at age zero. Being purebred was among the factors associated with shorter life expectancy, alongside non ideal bodyweight in either direction.
The breed specific figures in that work ranged from 14.4 years for Burmese and Birman cats down to 6.8 years for the Sphynx, which is the sort of spread that should make anyone sceptical of a generic pedigree lifespan claim. Maine Coon was not among the breeds we saw individually reported in the summary we read, so we are not going to invent a figure for it. What the study does establish is the baseline your expectations should sit against, and the fact that purebred status pulls in the wrong direction.

Set the genetics aside and the daily reality of this breed is less dramatic than the photographs suggest, with a few genuine consequences.
Coat length means grooming, and grooming means a cat that has to accept being handled. That habit is built early or it is fought over for a decade, which is an argument for thinking about handling from the first week rather than the first mat. Body size means the furniture has to work. A litter tray sized for an average cat is a tray this breed will half stand in. A carrier bought for a kitten will be useless within the year, which matters more than it sounds because a cat that cannot be transported comfortably is a cat that arrives at the vet already stressed. Height matters too: this is a breed that will get onto anything, so pet proofing is worth doing properly rather than reactively.
Personality is the part where breed profiles become fiction. Individual variation within any cat breed is larger than the average difference between breeds, and a page cannot tell you what the cat in front of you is like. What you can do is read the actual animal rather than the label, and pet body language is more use for that than any breed description including this one.
Is this breed right for you
Two honest questions, and they are not the ones usually asked.
Do you want a large, long haired, sociable cat, or do you want a Maine Coon specifically? If it is the first, rescue centres have cats that match that description and no unknown parentage risk that a DNA test cannot address, because you can see the adult animal in front of you. The adult versus young animal argument is written about dogs but the reasoning transfers directly.
And are you prepared to walk away from a breeder who will not produce paperwork? That is the question that actually determines the outcome, because everything else on this page is only useful if you are willing to act on it in the moment, holding a kitten, in someone’s kitchen.
