Bengal Cat: One Registry Sentence, and What Follows It

Three documents, read on 5 August 2026. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy breed description for the Bengal, Characterization of an Early Onset, Autosomal Recessive, Progressive Retinal Degeneration in Bengal Cats, published 6 August 2015, and Life tables of annual life expectancy and risk factors for mortality in cats in the UK, published 7 May 2024.

The first two contradict each other in one specific sentence, and that contradiction is the most useful thing on this page.

What the registry publishes

The GCCF describes the Bengal as “a medium to large cat of foreign type with a strong, muscular athletic body”, and as “a cat with personality plus! It is confident, active, curious, athletic and energetic”.

On the coat it is unusually emphatic: “the short dense plush coat should feel soft and very luxurious, and is unlike the feel of any other cat coat”. Two patterns are recognised. Spotted, where the spots are “large and well formed”, and marbled, showing “swirled patches or streaks that are not symmetrical”.

On origin it records that the breed began when Jean Mill crossed an Asian Leopard Cat, Prionailurus bengalensis bengalensis, with a domestic cat in the early 1960s, and that Burmese, Egyptian Mau, Ocicat, Abyssinian and American Shorthair were used in foundation breeding. A domestic breed with a documented wild ancestor is unusual and it is the reason registries handle early generations separately.

The sentence, and the list underneath it

The GCCF page says: “The Bengal is generally a healthy cat. There are no diseases specific to the breed.”

Immediately after that sentence, the same page lists conditions breeders should monitor for. Flat chested kitten syndrome. Patellar luxation. Pyruvate kinase deficiency. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Progressive retinal atrophy.

Both things are on one page from one publisher, and they are not easy to hold together. A reader who stops at the first sentence takes away something different from a reader who reads the list. We are not accusing the GCCF of anything: registries write summary sentences for a general audience and monitoring lists for breeders, and the two audiences get different documents in most walks of life. But this site’s job is to report what a publisher published, and what this publisher published is a reassurance followed by five named conditions.

The peer reviewed literature settles the argument in at least one case, which is the next section.

What the 2015 paper established

The paper characterises an early onset, progressive retinal degeneration in Bengal cats.

Autosomal recessive means two copies are needed for a cat to be affected, and that carriers with one copy are unaffected and invisible without a test. That is precisely the pattern that produces the sentence “there are no diseases specific to the breed” in a population where the disease is present: most cats are fine, most matings produce nothing, and the problem appears when two carriers meet.

The paper did not identify the causal gene and explicitly ruled out two candidates known from other breeds. Commercial tests for a Bengal specific variant are now marketed; we could not source, from a publisher, a current allele frequency in the tested UK population, so no frequency is given here.

How long cats live, and what the breed data does not tell us

The 2024 UK cat life tables analysed 7,936 confirmed deaths from a population of 1,254,484 cats under veterinary care.

The Bengal was among the breeds in that analysis. We could not obtain its specific figure with a confidence interval from the material we were able to read, and we are not going to interpolate one from the breeds around it. What can be said, because the paper says it, is that being purebred was itself associated with a shorter life than being crossbred, and that the crossbred figure of 11.89 years is the reference point that matters when anyone quotes a breed number at you.

Look at the width of the Sphynx interval, 4.53 to 8.83, for a sense of how much uncertainty sits behind a breed figure when the number of deaths in that breed is small. Any Bengal figure would carry the same kind of uncertainty.

Figures we decline to print

  • No vaccination schedule, interval, minimum age or vaccine name. Site wide rule, and it applies to a breed with a wild ancestor exactly as it applies to any other cat.

  • No enclosure size, no exercise duration and no environmental prescription. These circulate widely for active breeds. A number would be read as sufficient, and sufficiency is not something a web page can certify.

What we could not source

  • A life expectancy figure with a confidence interval for the Bengal specifically. The breed was in the 2024 analysis; its own row was not available to us, and it has not been guessed.
  • An allele frequency for the Bengal retinal variant in any tested population. Commercial tests exist. A published frequency was not obtained.
  • A prevalence figure for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Bengals. Named on the registry list, not sourced to a study we could read.
  • A prevalence figure for flat chested kitten syndrome or patellar luxation in the breed. Same position.
  • The GCCF registration policy document. The link we followed returned a 404 on 5 August 2026, so nothing about generation registration rules is asserted here beyond what the breed description itself says.
