Siamese Cat Breed Guide - The Coat, the Voice, the Data

The points are a temperature map, the inheritance is recessive, and this breed has a real published life expectancy figure. All three explained.

The coat is a thermometer, and that is not a metaphor

The Siamese pattern is the most literal piece of biology in any cat breed, and almost nobody explains it properly. The dark points are not decoration. They are a map of which parts of the cat run coolest.

The gene involved is tyrosinase, TYR, which produces the enzyme required to make melanin. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis identifies the Siamese variant as c.940G greater than A, and describes the mechanism directly: pigment production is reduced in warmer areas of the body, leading to darker pigmentation in the cat’s cooler extremities such as the paws and ears.

So a Siamese is pale where it is warm and dark where it is cool. Face, ears, paws and tail are the parts furthest from the body core and the parts that lose most heat. Everything else stays light because the enzyme underperforms at core body temperature. Langford Vets describes the same mechanism as temperature sensitive pigment production.

Two practical consequences follow that most owners eventually notice and rarely understand. Siamese kittens are born pale, because the womb is uniformly warm and there are no cool extremities in it. And the pattern is not fixed for life: any part of the cat that runs cooler or warmer than usual for a sustained period can change shade. If you notice a patch of coat that has changed colour, that is worth mentioning to your vet as an observation, because they know what it can indicate and we do not.

The genetics, in the form a breeder will use

Colourpoint restriction is autosomal recessive. UC Davis states it plainly: colourpoint is recessive to wild type. The dominant wild type C allele produces a fully coloured cat, so a cat carrying one copy of the Siamese allele looks entirely normal while still being able to pass the pattern on.

Langford puts the practical version this way: two copies of the Siamese allele are required for Siamese colouration, and a cat with one copy is a carrier showing solid colour instead.

The Burmese allele complicates it in a way worth knowing if you are looking at kittens with an unusual shade. UC Davis describes Burmese as incompletely dominant to Siamese, with heterozygotes carrying one of each producing an intermediate colour called mink. Langford describes mink as intermediate between Siamese and Burmese and notes it also appears in some snow Bengal varieties. Two cats that both look wrong for their pedigree can be explained entirely by which two alleles they carry.

Lifespan, with an actual number for this breed

Most breed pages invent lifespan figures. For the Siamese there is a real one.

Teng, Brodbelt, Church and O’Neill published life tables for UK cats in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2024, built from 7,936 cats under primary veterinary care that died within a defined window. Life expectancy at age zero for the Siamese came out at 11.7 years, which is identical to the figure for UK companion cats overall and slightly below the 11.9 years reported for crossbreeds.

For context on the spread, the same work reported 14.4 years for both Burmese and Birman cats at the top and 6.8 years for the Sphynx at the bottom. Female cats had a 1.33 year advantage over males at age zero. Purebred status was among the factors associated with shorter life expectancy, as was non ideal bodyweight in either direction.

The honest reading of a Siamese figure that matches the general population average is that this is not a breed whose pedigree buys you extra years, and not one whose pedigree costs you many either. That is a more useful thing to know than any number quoted without a source.

The voice, which is the real decision

Ask anyone who has lived with a Siamese what defines the breed and they will not mention the coat. They will mention the noise.

We looked for a study quantifying Siamese vocalisation against other breeds and did not find one, so this section is deliberately short on assertions. What we can say is that the reputation is consistent enough, across enough independent accounts, to be worth treating as a real risk when you are deciding, and that nobody appears to have measured it.

The decision that follows is about your household rather than the cat. Thin walls, shift work, a light sleeper, a baby, a home office with calls in it. If any of those describe you, a breed with this reputation deserves more thought than its appearance is inviting you to give it. Meeting adult cats from the same breeding line, rather than only kittens, is the closest thing to a test available.

Health, and where the evidence actually is

Two things worth knowing, and a lot of things we are not going to repeat because we could not source them.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine names hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as the most common heart disease of cats and lists the breeds with higher prevalence: Maine Coon, Ragdoll, British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Sphynx, Bengal, Chartreux, Norwegian Forest, Siberian and Persian. The Siamese is not on that list, which is a useful negative and one that breed pages never report because good news is not interesting.

Langford Vets lists progressive retinal atrophy rdAc among its feline genetic disease tests without restricting it to a single breed, alongside tests for polycystic kidney disease, pyruvate kinase deficiency, mucopolysaccharidosis VI and glycogen storage disease. If you are buying, ask which of these the breeder has run and ask for results in writing naming the laboratory and the cats. A breeder who has done the work will hand them over without being asked twice.

Anything about your own cat’s health goes to your vet. There is no screening schedule, no interpretation of a result and no treatment on this page, deliberately.

What we could not source

Several things repeated everywhere about this breed did not survive a search.

That Siamese cats are more intelligent than other breeds. We found no comparative study. Intelligence in cats is difficult to define and harder to measure across breeds.

That the crossed eyes and kinked tail historically associated with the breed are linked to the colourpoint gene. The visual pathway story is often told confidently. We could not find a source we were willing to cite for it, so it is recorded here as unverified rather than repeated as fact.

That Siamese cats bond to one person only. Widely stated, no evidence found, and it is the kind of claim that gets used to explain away behaviour that might be worth investigating.
