Poodles combine brains with charm. They are widely considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds, quick to learn, eager to please and famously good at dog sports and tricks. Far from being merely show dogs, they were originally water retrievers, and that working drive shows in their playfulness and athleticism. Poodles bond closely with their families, can be a little reserved with strangers, and thrive on mental stimulation and company.
All three sizes need daily exercise and, just as importantly, mental work — a bored Poodle is a mischievous Poodle. Standards in particular are athletic dogs that enjoy running and swimming. The upside of that cleverness is wonderful trainability: Poodles excel at obedience and learn quickly with positive methods. Puzzle toys and new tricks keep their busy minds satisfied.
The Poodle’s curly, low-shedding coat is the reason they (and crosses like the Labradoodle) are popular with allergy-conscious owners — but “low-shedding” means “high-maintenance”. The coat keeps growing and mats easily, so it needs brushing several times a week and professional clipping every 4–8 weeks. Factor regular grooming costs into owning a Poodle.
Poodles are generally long-lived, with smaller varieties often reaching 14–15 years. Known considerations vary by size but can include hip dysplasia and eye conditions (Standards), patellar luxation and dental issues (smaller types), and bloat (Standards). Buying from health-tested parents, good dental care, keeping a healthy weight and keeping toxic foods away all help.
Poodles suit owners who want a clever, trainable, low-shedding companion and can commit to regular grooming and mental stimulation. There is a size for almost every home. Give them company, exercise and puzzles, and you will have an elegant, devoted and remarkably smart friend.
