Answer six questions, get your three best-matched dog breeds - with live photos. The matching logic weighs the factors that actually predict a happy match: your space, energy, experience, kids and grooming tolerance. It will happily tell you a greyhound fits your flat better than a border collie - because it does.

🐕 Which Dog Breed Fits My Life?

What breed quizzes won't tell you (but we will)

Individual temperament beats breed averages - meet the actual dog, and give rescues a serious look: adult rescue dogs show you exactly the temperament you're getting. Budget matters as much as lifestyle: our cost calculator and food cost calculator give you the honest numbers per breed size. And flat-faced breeds (French Bulldogs included) carry real airway-health considerations - buy only from health-tested lines, or adopt.

FAQ

Why only ten breeds?

These ten cover the main lifestyle archetypes and are matched conservatively. Your result is a starting family of dogs - the breed profiles in our guides section go deeper on each.

Where do the photos come from?

Live from the open-source Dog CEO API - refresh your results and you'll meet different dogs of the same breed.

What about mixed breeds?

Often the best of both worlds - use your matches as a guide to which mixes to look for at shelters.

What this quiz is actually doing

It matches your answers against the characteristics we hold for each breed and returns the closest fits. It runs in your browser, sends nothing anywhere, and has no idea who you are between visits.

It is a starting shortlist, not a verdict. The honest description of any breed selector, including this one, is that it narrows a very long list down to a short one you then have to do real work on.

Why breed is a weaker predictor than most quizzes imply

Breed describes a tendency across a population, not a guarantee about an individual animal. Two dogs of the same breed, raised differently, can be enormously different to live with, and the variation within a breed is frequently larger than the average difference between two breeds.

We mention this because breed selectors tend to be written as though the answer settles the question. It does not. It tells you which populations are worth looking at, which is genuinely useful and considerably less than it sounds.

The inputs that matter more than the quiz can capture

Time is the one people underestimate most, and not just daily exercise time. It is the fourteen year commitment, the holidays that become more complicated, and the working pattern you might have in five years rather than the one you have now.

Cost is the second. Food, insurance, routine preventive care and the occasional unplanned bill are all real, they vary widely by size and by country, and the ones that arrive unexpectedly are the ones that catch people out.

Housing and household are the third. Whether you rent, who else lives there, whether anyone in the household has allergies, and what happens to the animal if your circumstances change.

What we do not do here

We do not recommend a breeder, a rescue, an insurer or a food, and no result on this page earns us anything. We also give no health guidance about any breed. Where a breed has known health considerations, those are questions for a vet and for whoever you get the animal from, with documentation.

If you are choosing between individual animals rather than breeds, the most useful conversation available to you is with the rescue or breeder about that specific animal, and with a vet about what to check.

A better use of the shortlist

Take the two or three breeds this returns and go and meet adults of each, not puppies. An adult tells you what you are actually signing up for; a puppy tells you almost nothing about what it will be like to live with in three years.

Then read our cost and care pages for those breeds, which are sourced and dated, and note where we say the published data does not exist. That absence is part of the picture too.
