Can Dogs Eat Coffee - Caffeine, Grounds and the Clock

No. Coffee belongs on the short list of things a dog should never get, and the reason is worth a couple of minutes, because most pages treat it as a footnote to chocolate. It is not a footnote. It is the same chemical family arriving in a different shape and on a different clock.
Chocolate and coffee both carry methylxanthines. In chocolate the dominant one is theobromine, and the Merck Veterinary Manual states that the concentration of theobromine in chocolate is three to ten times the concentration of caffeine. Coffee inverts that arrangement. What a dog gets from a spent filter, a scoop of grounds or a handful of beans is caffeine, more or less on its own.
That changes the shape of the problem rather than its seriousness. Merck gives the half life of theobromine in dogs as 17.5 hours and of caffeine as 4.5 hours. A dog therefore clears caffeine close to four times faster than it clears theobromine. Chocolate is the long, slow version. Coffee is the short, steep one. Neither is a reason to sit at home and watch.
What caffeine actually does inside a dog
This is the part almost no free page bothers with, and it is the part that makes the rest make sense. Merck describes four separate actions, and they all push in the same direction.
The first is the one people half remember. Theobromine and caffeine, in Merck's wording, "competitively inhibit cellular adenosine receptors, resulting in CNS stimulation, diuresis, and tachycardia". Adenosine is the molecule that accumulates through a long day and quietly tells a nervous system to settle. Caffeine sits in its seat. The brake is not cut, it is simply occupied.
The second is quieter and matters more than it sounds. Methylxanthines "inhibit phosphodiesterase, resulting in increased levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate". Cyclic AMP is a cellular amplifier, and phosphodiesterase is the enzyme that switches it off again. Block the off switch and the amplifier keeps running.
The third explains the tremor. Merck records that they "increase intracellular calcium levels by increasing cellular calcium entry and inhibiting intracellular sequestration of calcium by the sarcoplasmic reticulum of striated muscle". Muscle contraction is a calcium event. More free calcium inside the fibre means harder, less controlled contraction.
The fourth is systemic. Circulating levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline rise. A dog that is already stimulated centrally now has its own stress hormones added on top.
Four mechanisms, one direction, and not one of them has a switch you own at home. That is the honest argument for ringing rather than watching.

Where the caffeine actually is in your house
People picture a dog drinking from a mug. That is the least likely version of this. The concentrated forms are dry, they smell strongly of food, and they live at nose height.

We do not print a per kilogram caffeine figure, on purpose. The only thing a worried owner can do with such a number is use it to talk themselves out of ringing, usually on the strength of a guess about how much was eaten. Figures that describe the product rather than the animal are fair game, and you will find them above. Figures that describe your dog belong to the person on the phone, who can ask the questions a page cannot.
The clock, and why two authorities give different windows
Look this up and you will find two different timings quoted with equal confidence. They are not in conflict, and understanding why is more useful than picking one.
VCA states that with caffeine, "symptoms can start within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion and can last for 12 to 36 hours". Merck, writing about chocolate, states that clinical signs "usually occur within 6 to 12 hours after ingestion". Both are correct about the thing they are describing. Merck's slower window belongs to a product dominated by theobromine, which the same manual says has a 17.5 hour half life. VCA's faster window belongs to caffeine on its own, half life 4.5 hours. The product decides the clock.
The practical consequence is uncomfortable. With coffee you may get less warning than with chocolate, and you will get it at a point when the phone call is already overdue.

The bin, the caddy and the cafetiere
Nearly every case that reaches a practice has a domestic shape to it. Someone tipped the filter basket into an open caddy and went to work. A cafetiere sat cooling on a coffee table at exactly the height of a labrador's chin. A bag of beans came home from a market and got left in a shopping bag on the floor. Guests arrived, cups were put down at knee level, and nobody was counting.
Grounds deserve their own sentence. They are the residue of an extraction, so they feel spent, and that is why people underestimate them. They are also damp, warm and strongly aromatic, which is a fair description of everything a dog wants to investigate. VCA names dogs and cats together as vulnerable to caffeine. Cats are less likely to raid a bin, but they are more likely to walk across a worktop and more likely to groom something off their coat afterwards. The route in is different and the chemistry is not. Four things owners get wrong
"It was decaf, so it does not count." Decaffeinated is a reduction, not an absence, and it is not your call to make from a kitchen. Say the word decaf on the phone along with the form and the rough amount, and let the person taking the call weigh it.
"He only licked a spill." Possibly, and a spill of brewed coffee is genuinely dilute. The trouble is that the same sentence gets used for a floor covered in instant granules, which is not dilute at all. Describe the form, not the puddle.
"He seems completely fine." He may well be, and he was also fine ten minutes after eating it, which tells you nothing. The onset windows above exist precisely because normal behaviour early is the expected state, not the good news.
"It is basically chocolate and he has had chocolate before and was fine." Different molecule, different half life, different product concentration. The comparison you are making is not the comparison you think you are making. Is a lick of my coffee going to hurt him?
Nobody can answer that from a page, and anyone who does is guessing about your dog's weight, the strength of the coffee and how much actually went in. What a page can tell you is that brewed coffee is the dilute end of the range and dry grounds, beans, granules and tablets are the concentrated end. Report the form and let a professional do the weighing.
Why do people keep saying chocolate is worse?
Because in one specific sense it is: theobromine hangs around far longer, with a 17.5 hour half life in dogs against 4.5 hours for caffeine, so the exposure is drawn out. That is a statement about duration, not about safety. It says nothing about how much caffeine sits in a scoop of grounds compared with how much theobromine sits in a piece of milk chocolate.
What about coffee flavoured ice cream or a tiramisu?

Are there caffeine sources people forget entirely?
Tablets, mostly. VCA names diet pills and combination cold and pain preparations, which are the most concentrated forms in an ordinary house and the ones least likely to be described accurately on the phone, because the caffeine is not what anyone bought them for. If a packet is chewed, keep the packet.
My dog got into a bin with grounds and other food waste in it. Does that change anything?
It changes the questions, because a bin raid is rarely a single ingredient. Onion skins, cooked bones, fatty trimmings and mouldy leftovers can all be in the same handful, and each raises its own issue. Say "bin" on the phone rather than "coffee", and list what was in it.
