Can Dogs Eat Macadamia Nuts - The Wobble Nobody Explains
This page is not veterinary advice. No doses, no remedies, no procedures. It exists so you know what you are looking at when a dog who ate nuts suddenly cannot use his back legs, and so you ring rather than film it.
If your dog has eaten macadamia nuts, phone your vet. What you can see does not tell you what else was in the bowl.
No. Macadamias are a strange entry in the toxicology literature: dramatic to watch, poorly understood, restricted to one species, and usually survivable. All four of those facts are worth knowing, because together they explain why the advice is ring anyway.
Nobody knows why it happens
The Merck Veterinary Manual is unusually blunt about this. On macadamia nut toxicosis in dogs it states that "the mechanism of toxicity is not known" (read 4 August 2026).
That is not a gap in this page, it is the state of the science. There is no identified compound, no test, and no way to reason from the type of nut, the roast or the brand. What there is instead is a consistent and well described clinical picture.
What it looks like
Merck describes signs developing within 12 hours of ingestion, including "weakness, CNS depression, vomiting, ataxia, tremors, or hyperthermia", and notes that the tremors may be a consequence of underlying muscle weakness rather than a primary effect.
In an ordinary living room that presents as a dog whose back end has stopped working. He tries to stand and the hind legs slide. He walks like a sailor. He may be shaking, panting, hot, and clearly distressed by his own inability to do a thing he has done every day of his life.

The reason this page exists is not the outcome, it is the resemblance. A dog who suddenly cannot use his hind legs is also what spinal injury looks like, what some poisonings look like, and what an intervertebral disc problem looks like. None of those are things to sit out at home on the assumption it was the nuts.
The reassuring part, stated honestly
Merck records that "most clinically affected dogs recover without any specific treatment" and that "clinical signs are usually mild and self-limiting, requiring no treatment", with resolution generally within 12 to 48 hours.
We are including that because leaving it out would be dishonest, and because a frightened owner deserves the true shape of the risk. It does not change the advice. It changes what you are likely to be told once a vet has ruled out the things that look identical and are not self-limiting.
Dogs only
Merck states that "dogs are the only species in which clinical signs have been reported." Cats, so far as the published record goes, do not do this. If a cat has eaten nuts, the conversation is about fat, salt and obstruction rather than about macadamias specifically.
The bigger problem is what the nuts came with
Macadamias are rarely eaten alone by a dog. They arrive inside something, and the something is usually worse.

When you ring, the useful sentence is not "he ate macadamias", it is "he ate a chocolate covered macadamia cookie with raisins in it". Bring the packet.
The other nut problem: mould
Nuts that have been in a bowl, a compost heap or a bin for a while are a separate hazard, and this one is not self-limiting. Merck's entry on tremorgenic neuromycotoxicosis in dogs, read 4 August 2026, describes moulds growing on "food (walnuts, peanuts, dairy products), feed (silage), or food waste (compost)" and producing penitrems and roquefortine C.
The clinical picture Merck lists there is "vomiting, tremors, intention tremors, hyperesthesia, ataxia, nystagmus, tachycardia, and seizures", with onset within one to two hours or up to several hours. Recovery "can be complete within several days or occur gradually over several weeks", and Merck notes reported cases of ongoing ataxia for months to years.
Two things follow. A wobbly, tremoring dog after eating nuts is not automatically a macadamia story, and the compost heap deserves a lid.
Whole nuts, small dogs, and shells
Independent of any toxin, a whole nut is an object. Small dogs, greedy eaters and dogs who swallow without chewing are the ones where a nut or a shell becomes a mechanical problem. Why the resemblance is the whole argument for ringing
Sudden hind limb weakness in a dog is a short list of possibilities and most of them are not self-limiting. Intervertebral disc disease produces exactly this picture in the breeds built for it, and it is time sensitive in a way that a nut is not. Some poisonings produce tremors and weakness. So does a spinal injury from a jump the owner did not see, and so does heatstroke on a warm day. The nut in the bin is a hypothesis, not a finding. It became the explanation because it is the thing you noticed, and noticing is not the same as establishing. A vet has ways of narrowing that list within an hour that you do not have at home, and several of the alternatives get considerably worse while you wait to see whether the wobble resolves on its own.
What to write down while you wait
Because the picture can shift, a short set of notes is genuinely useful to the person who sees your dog. Record the time the weakness started, whether it came on over minutes or over hours, whether it affects the back legs only or all four, whether he can stand at all when lifted, whether he is tremoring at rest or only when he tries to move, and whether he is hot to the touch. Note whether he has been sick and what came up. Note whether he has jumped, fallen or been running hard in the last day.

He is wobbly but seems otherwise happy. Do I still ring?
Yes. The signs Merck lists for macadamias overlap almost completely with problems that are not self-limiting, and no page can tell you which one you are looking at.
Merck says most dogs recover without treatment. Why the fuss?
Because that sentence applies to confirmed macadamia toxicosis, and you do not have a confirmed anything. You have a dog with hind limb weakness and a guess about a bowl.
How long does it last?
Merck gives 12 to 48 hours for signs to resolve in macadamia cases. The mould related picture can run considerably longer, which is one reason the distinction matters.
Is roasted, salted or raw different?
The mechanism is unknown, so there is no basis for saying one preparation is safer. Salt and fat are their own separate issues.
My cat ate one.
Merck records dogs as the only species with reported clinical signs. Ring anyway, because fat, salt and the size of the object are still real. My cat ate something is the better route.
