How the estimate works
It uses the standard veterinary energy formula (RER = 70 × weight0.75, scaled for typical neutered adults) against average dry-food energy density. Real needs vary ±25% with age, activity and the specific food — the feeding chart on your bag plus a monthly body-condition check beat any calculator.
How to spend less without feeding worse
Bigger bags cost 20–40% less per kilo (store airtight), subscription deliveries usually take another 5–10% off, and "complete" mid-range foods meeting FEDIAF/AAFCO standards feed most pets as well as premium marketing does. The real waste is over-feeding: portions creep, and an overweight pet costs more in food and vet bills — check portions with a proper measuring cup, not a mug.
FAQ
Does this work for wet food?
Wet food is ~4× less energy-dense per kg, so multiply the daily grams by ~4, or compute per-pouch: most cats need 2–3 standard 85 g pouches daily if fed wet-only.
Puppies and kittens?
Growing animals need up to 2–3× the adult energy per kg — use the growth chart on the food and your vet's guidance rather than this adult calculator.
