Diet is one of the few things an owner changes deliberately and it interacts with conditions we cannot see from here, so the amounts and the timetable belong to the person who can examine your animal. If your dog or cat is vomiting repeatedly, has diarrhoea that will not settle, is refusing food, or has become lethargic after a change of diet, stop reading and phone your own vet. This page is about what the published research on diet change actually measured, and it exists to make that call better informed, not to replace it.

What this page used to be, and why it is not that any more

This page used to print a transition timetable. It does not now, and the reason is worth stating plainly rather than quietly deleting.

A timetable is an instruction. An instruction about food is a health instruction, and this site does not give those, for the same reason it does not print doses on any page except the tool that carries their sources and their caveats. What we can do, and what almost nobody else does, is show you the actual evidence underneath the timetable everybody repeats, including where that evidence stops. When you have read this you will be able to ask your vet a much better question than what schedule should I use.

The short version: there are two decent studies, both in dogs, both in research beagles. They agree that changing food abruptly does something measurable. Neither of them tested the number of days that the entire internet repeats. And for cats, the largest professional body we could find gives a timeline more than five times longer than the one it gives for dogs, with no citation attached to either.

The study that actually compared abrupt against gradual

The design, in plain terms. Thirteen beagle puppies, six months old, split into two groups: seven switched straight onto the new food, six moved across over seven days. Both groups ended on the same food. The measurements were faecal scoring, faecal fermentation characteristics, the bacterial composition of the gut, and a metabolite profile.

The findings. The gradual group had significantly better faecal scores (reported at p less than 0.05) and did not develop diarrhoea; the abrupt group produced more soft stool and more diarrhoea. In the gut, the gradual group showed increases in Turicibacter and Faecalibacterium, while the abrupt group showed an increase in Streptococcus. The metabolic picture is the part that gets least attention and is arguably the most striking: the gradual transition altered 29 metabolites across 4 pathways, while the abrupt change altered 50 metabolites across 11 pathways, concentrated in amino acid and lipid metabolism. The abrupt group showed raised histamine and spermine and reduced serotonin and 5 hydroxyindoleacetic acid. The authors concluded that gradual transition most likely reduced the diarrhoea rate by modulating the composition and the metabolism of the gut microbiota.

We have deliberately not reproduced this study’s ration figures. The paper states the quantity of food used and the daily increment, and reprinting either would put a feeding amount on this page with a research beagle behind it and your animal in front of it. Those are not the same animal. If you want the numbers, the paper is open access and it is named above in full.

What the study is, honestly: thirteen animals, one breed, one age, one facility, one pair of foods. That is a real result and it is a small one. It is enough to say that abrupt change measurably disturbs a puppy gut. It is not enough to tell you what happens to a nine year old cat with a kidney problem, and the paper does not claim it is.

How fast a gut actually moves

The second study is the one that gives the whole subject its shape.

Lin and colleagues, with Kelly S. Swanson as corresponding author, Longitudinal fecal microbiome and metabolite data demonstrate rapid shifts and subsequent stabilization after an abrupt dietary change in healthy adult dogs, in Animal Microbiome, volume 4, article 46, 2022, published by BioMed Central. Twelve healthy adult beagles, average age around five years, in a crossover design. Two weeks on a control kibble, then a switch onto one of two very different diets: a high fibre version, and a protein rich canned food. Faecal samples on set days before and after the switch.

Two numbers from it are worth carrying around. Metabolites stabilised within about two days of the change. The faecal microbiota stabilised within about six days. A statistical model could tell which diet a dog was on by the second day after the switch. And crucially, the paper reports no clinical signs: these were healthy adults, the change was abrupt, and the visible outcome was nothing at all while the invisible one was substantial.

Put the two studies side by side and you get something more useful than either alone. A gut reorganises itself within roughly a week whether you transition or not. In healthy adult dogs that reorganisation happened without the owner seeing anything. In six month old puppies, doing it abruptly produced diarrhoea. The transition period is not there to give the bacteria time; the bacteria are quicker than that. It is there to keep the animal comfortable while they do it, and how much that matters depends on the animal.

What the professional guidance says, and what it does not carry

The American Animal Hospital Association publishes a pet owner handout on nutrition, carrying a 2021 copyright, which we read on 5 August 2026. It gives two timelines. For dogs, seven days. For cats, up to forty days. It warns that a sudden switch may cause digestive upset and food aversion, and it singles out cats as the species where this matters most.

Two things about that document deserve to be said out loud.

First, the two species get timelines that differ by more than fivefold, from the same professional body, in the same handout. Almost every consumer article you will find applies a single seven to ten day rule to both species. If AAHA is right, that advice is wrong for cats by a wide margin, and the sites repeating it have not noticed because they are copying each other rather than reading AAHA.

Second, the handout cites nothing. No study, no reference list, no reference period for the numbers. That is a normal and defensible choice for a one page owner handout, and it means the forty day figure is a professional recommendation rather than a measured result. We are telling you which kind of claim it is, because nobody else does.

We have also deliberately not reprinted the proportional method the handout describes. That is a feeding instruction, and this site does not publish those. The document is named above and it is public.

The number nobody has tested

Here is the finding that this page exists for. Seven to ten days is the most repeated number in pet nutrition, and we could not find a study that tested it against any alternative.

The 2023 puppy study used seven days and compared it against no transition at all. That tells you seven is better than zero. It does not tell you that seven is better than three, or than fourteen, or that ten is better than seven. Nobody, as far as we can establish, has run that comparison in either species. The number is not wrong. It is simply not a result, and it is presented everywhere as though it were.

This is the same pattern we found on the litter tray evidence page, where the most repeated rule in that subject also turned out to be a consensus rather than a trial, and it is the pattern set out in general terms on our page on poison control directory. When a number is everywhere and its source is nowhere, that is worth knowing before you build a decision on it.

Cats, and the hole in the middle of the literature

We went looking for a controlled study of diet transition in cats on 5 August 2026, of the kind Liao and colleagues ran in puppies. We did not find one. What came back instead was manufacturer guidance, retailer guidance, and consumer articles, several of which repeat a dog timeline at a species that AAHA says needs a far longer one.

That absence matters more than it looks. Cats are the species where the guidance is most cautious, where food aversion is named as a specific risk, and where the recommended period is longest. It is therefore the species where a controlled comparison would be most useful, and it is the one where we could not find it. We would rather print that sentence than fill the gap with a dog study wearing a cat costume.

What kind of switch is this

Not every change of food is the same event, and the published record covers some of them and not others. Tick whichever describes your situation. Each one opens to say what the evidence above does and does not reach. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no JavaScript in it. It does not produce a plan, because a plan is the thing that belongs to your vet.

This is the best covered case on the page. Lin and colleagues, 2022, switched twelve healthy adult beagles abruptly onto two very different diets and reported no clinical signs, with the gut settling within about six days. That is one small colony of one breed. It is the closest thing to your situation that anybody has published, and it still is not your dog.Covered, once, in thirteen animals. Liao and colleagues, 2023, is the only direct comparison we found: abrupt change produced more soft stool and diarrhoea than a seven day transition in six month old beagle puppies. Six month old beagles in a facility. Take the direction of the finding seriously and the precision of it lightly.Not covered by any trial we could find. We looked on 5 August 2026 and found manufacturer and retailer guidance rather than research. AAHA gives cats a far longer timeline than dogs, warns specifically about food aversion, and cites nothing. This is the biggest gap on the page.Then the schedule is already decided and it is not ours to second guess. A diet change made for a medical reason is part of a treatment plan, and the timetable, the food and the monitoring all belong to the person who prescribed it. Ask them what to watch for and how long to give it before you report back.The one case where the choice may not exist. Nothing published tells you how to weigh an unavoidable abrupt change against a gradual one you cannot have. Everything above was measured in healthy animals. None of it transfers to an animal that is already ill, and food is one of the variables a vet may want to control. Phone your own vet. What we could not source

  1. Any trial comparing one transition length against another. Seven against three, seven against fourteen, ten against seven. In either species. This is the single largest gap and it sits directly under the most quoted number in the subject.
  2. Any controlled diet transition study in cats. Searched 5 August 2026. What came back was commercial guidance.
  3. The evidence behind the AAHA timelines. The handout carries no citation and no reference period for its numbers, so we cannot tell you what the forty day figure for cats rests on.
  4. Anything measured outside a research colony. Both studies above used beagles in facilities. We found no cohort study of ordinary owned animals changing food in ordinary homes, which is where every one of our readers is standing.
  5. Any published figure for how often a diet change ends in a veterinary consultation. That would tell an owner how much any of this matters in practice. We could not find it for any country or any reference period.

A sixth absence, worth naming on its own: nobody has published what happens after the transition ends. Both studies stop within weeks. The question an owner actually has, whether the animal is better off on the new food six months later, is not answered by any of this, and a transition schedule quietly implies that it is.

Every source named on this page was read at source on 5 August 2026 and every figure carries its publisher and the year that publisher printed it. No feeding amount, no proportion and no schedule appears anywhere on this page, and that is a decision rather than an oversight.

What to take to your vet

If you are changing food by choice, the useful question is not which schedule but what should make me stop and call you. If you are changing it because you were asked to, the schedule already exists and the useful question is what to watch and when to report back. Either way, write down what the old food was, what the new one is, the day the change started, and what you have seen since.
