Temperament and personality

Maine Coons are often called the “gentle giants” and the “dogs of the cat world”, and both nicknames fit. They’re sociable, affectionate and people-oriented, often following their humans around, greeting them at the door and “chirping” rather than meowing. Many enjoy games of fetch and keep a kittenish playfulness for years. They’re typically calm, tolerant and brilliant with children and other pets.

Living with a big, playful cat

Despite their size, Maine Coons are usually easygoing and adaptable, but they appreciate space, sturdy climbing furniture and interactive play to keep their clever minds busy. Many are fascinated by water and may dabble paws in the bowl. Their friendly nature means they settle well into busy households — they like company and may be lonely if left alone too much.

Grooming and shedding

That magnificent shaggy double coat needs upkeep: brush a few times a week (more in shedding season) to prevent mats and tangles, particularly around the belly and behind the ears. Regular grooming also cuts down on hairballs. Otherwise they need the usual nail trims, dental care and a big, sturdy litter tray.

Health and lifespan

Maine Coons commonly live 12–15 years and are generally robust, but the breed has some known predispositions, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a heart condition), hip dysplasia, and a kidney condition (PKD) — reputable breeders screen for these. Keep your Coon at a healthy weight, feed a good-quality diet, and keep toxic foods and lilies well away.

Is a Maine Coon right for you?

Maine Coons suit households wanting an affectionate, sociable, interactive cat and who don’t mind the grooming and the sheer amount of cat. They’re wonderful with families and other animals. Provide company, vertical space, play and regular brushing, and a Maine Coon will be a loving, characterful companion for years.
