Pet Cost Calculator - What a Calculator Cannot Know

This page used to run a calculator that took a few inputs and returned a figure in pounds. It does not any more. The tool has been removed and this page now explains why, what a cost model would have to know in order to be right, and how to build your own version out of numbers that are actually true where you live.

That is not a retreat into vagueness. It is the opposite. A calculator that returns a confident wrong number is less useful than a page that tells you precisely which four quantities decide your answer and where to obtain each one. This page is the second thing.

What our calculator actually did, stated plainly

It took a species, a size and a couple of lifestyle choices, multiplied some stored constants, and printed a total. Every one of those stored constants was a number somebody had typed in at some point, from a source that was already ageing, for a country that might not have been yours, at a price level that had already moved.

There was no uncertainty in the output, because there was no uncertainty in the model. That is the flaw. The quantity being estimated is genuinely uncertain, and an instrument that hides uncertainty is not simplifying, it is lying by omission.

Of the four data requirements in that second block, exactly one is now reliably obtainable by a member of the public, and it only became so in 2026.

The three numbers a calculator would need and cannot get

This is the honest core of the page. Three quantities dominate the answer, and none of them is available to a web page.

  • Your local price list. Until recently most practices did not publish one. The Competition and Markets Authority, reporting on 24 March 2026 and read 5 August 2026, found that “Less than 40% of practices have prices on their websites” and that “Less than half of people received pricing information in advance of recent non-routine treatment”. Its remedies now require comprehensive price lists for standard services, written estimates above a specified threshold and itemised bills. So this number is obtainable, but only by you, from your own practice.
  • Your animal’s probability of drawing an expensive condition. This is breed dependent and the published breed level data is patchy. Where it exists it is excellent: our breed cost pages quote disorder prevalences with confidence intervals. Where it does not exist, no calculator can substitute for it honestly.
  • The claims side. There is no openly published UK insurance claims dataset broken down by breed, species or condition that we could find. Without it, nobody can convert a disorder prevalence into an expected cost, and any calculator that appears to do so has invented the conversion.

A model missing one of those is approximate. A model missing all three is decoration.

Why an average is the wrong statistic here

Even with perfect data, a single figure would mislead, because pet spending is right skewed. Most animals cost a moderate amount. A minority cost a great deal. The mean sits between the two and describes neither.

The published data makes the skew concrete. VetCompass, read 5 August 2026, sampled 22,333 dogs from a UK population of 905,543 and found 65.8 per cent were diagnosed with at least one disorder in a single study year. That is a high base rate of something happening, and a wide spread in what that something is. Teng et al. 2022, Scientific Reports 12:6415, read 5 August 2026, shows the other axis: life expectancy at age 0 of 12.72 years for a Jack Russell Terrier against 4.53 years for a French Bulldog in the same dataset, with 11.23 years across all dogs.

A breed that lives twice as long as another does not cost twice as much, and it does not cost the same. It costs a different shape. Any instrument that returns one number for both has thrown away the only information that mattered.

Build your own, from numbers that are true where you live

Here is the replacement for the calculator. It is a worksheet rather than a widget, and every figure in it comes from you rather than from us. Work through it once and you will have something a calculator could never have given you: a model of your own household, in your own currency, at today’s prices, with your own tolerance built in.

The order matters. Start with what is knowable and fixed, then what recurs, then what you cannot know and must therefore insure or absorb.

Step 5 is the one people skip, and it is the only one that changes behaviour. A household that has written down its tolerance in advance makes a different decision at the consulting room door than a household that has not, and it makes it in a calmer state.

Print this or tick it on screen. There are no numbers on it because the numbers are yours. Each line is a figure to obtain or a decision to make, not advice.

Tick each line only when you have written the answer down somewhere you will find it again.

What we could not source

The reason this page has a worksheet instead of a widget is the list below. These are the things we would have needed to build an honest calculator.

  • Any openly published UK insurance claims dataset broken down by breed, species or condition. Without it there is no defensible way to convert a disorder prevalence into an expected cost.
  • Any figure for the proportion of UK pets that are insured, which every lifetime model assumes implicitly.
  • Regional or postcode level veterinary price data. The CMA remedies of March 2026 will make individual practice price lists available; they do not create a national dataset.
  • Breed level disorder data for most breeds. It exists for some and not for others, and a calculator cannot quietly interpolate across that gap.
  • A UK life table for any cat breed.
  • Any comparable dataset from outside the UK.
  • Prices, deliberately and permanently. That is a standing decision on this site.

And the deliberate refusals. This page publishes no feeding amounts, no weight targets, no doses, no treatment steps and no vaccination schedules, and neither did the tool that used to sit here. Some of the sources we read carry such figures. We do not reproduce them, because a number of that kind is safe when a professional applies it to an animal they have examined and unsafe when a stranger reads it off a screen.

The calculator itself is gone rather than hidden. The page keeps its address so that anybody who bookmarked it lands somewhere that explains what happened, which we think is better than a broken link or a silent redirect.
