Xylitol is the poisoning where the owner did everything right. Nobody feeds a dog chewing gum. The dog found a handbag, or a coat pocket, or the peanut butter jar that was bought because it was the healthier one.
The awkward part of this page is that the published thresholds are in milligrams and almost no product tells you how many milligrams it contains. We have not solved that, and we are not going to pretend we have by inventing an average.
Xylitol exposure, against the figures Merck publishes
This reports what one veterinary reference publishes. It is not an assessment of your animal, and it will never tell you your pet is fine. Every result ends at a phone call.
Most packets do not tell you. Read the section below on why we will not guess a figure per piece of gum for you, and what to do instead.

What the sources say xylitol does
The Merck Veterinary Manual, read on 4 August 2026, describes the mechanism in one sentence: in dogs xylitol “stimulates a rapid, dose-dependent insulin release that can result in profound hypoglycemia”. Xylitol looks enough like sugar to the canine pancreas that it triggers a large insulin response, and then it is not sugar, so the blood glucose falls with nothing to hold it up.
That is the first of two problems. The second is the liver, and Merck treats it separately: “Some dogs ingesting xylitol at doses > 500 mg/kg (227 mg/lb) may develop severe hepatic insufficiency or failure.” Two different injuries with two different thresholds and two different clocks.
The FDA, in a consumer update titled “Paws Off Xylitol; It’s Dangerous for Dogs” dated 17 December 2025 and read on 4 August 2026, describes the same insulin effect and puts the hypoglycaemic window at “within 10 to 60 minutes”. Pet Poison Helpline, read the same day, goes shorter still, reporting life-threatening low blood sugar “even within 10-15 minutes of ingestion” as well as acute liver failure.

The gap between the third row and the last row is where owners get caught. A dog that has been watched for two hours and seems entirely normal has passed one window and not the other. Merck is explicit that formulation changes the timing, which is a polite way of saying that a chewy sweet and a liquid behave differently and nobody can tell you which yours was.

Why we will not tell you how much is in a piece of gum
This is the part every other page gets wrong, and it is worth being blunt about it. To use the Merck thresholds you need milligrams. To get milligrams from a packet of mints you need the xylitol content per unit, and manufacturers are not required to publish it.
Pet Poison Helpline states the position plainly: “The xylitol content of products varies widely, with some products containing minimal amounts and others containing very high amounts.” That is not a caveat you can average away. Two packets of sugar-free gum sitting next to each other on a shelf can differ by an order of magnitude, because in one xylitol is the main polyol and in the other it is a minor component alongside sorbitol or maltitol.
Pages that publish a milligrams-per-piece figure are picking one product and generalising. If they pick low and yours was high, the number they hand a frightened owner is wrong in the direction that causes a delay. We would rather tell you the tool cannot be filled in and send you to the phone with the packet in your hand, which is what the tool above does.
If the packet does give a xylitol content, it is usually on the nutrition panel as grams of polyols, sometimes broken out. Take the packet. A vet reading the actual label beats any estimate either of us could make.
Where xylitol turns up
The FDA update names sugarless chewing gum, sugar-free candy including mints and chocolate bars, breath mints, baked goods, cough syrup, chewable vitamins, mouthwash, toothpaste, peanut and nut butters, over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements and sugar-free desserts.
Pet Poison Helpline extends the list to “pudding, gelatin snacks, sauces, syrups, jams”, oral rinses, fish oils, “some essential oil products, nasal sprays, and even makeup and personal lubricants”.
Two of those deserve a sentence each. Nut butter, because it is the single most common vehicle for giving a dog anything at all, and the FDA says so directly: “If you give your dog nut butter as a treat or as a vehicle for pills, check the label first to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol.” Our page on peanut butter and dogs covers this at length. The FDA’s practical instruction is the one worth acting on today rather than in an emergency: “Check the label for xylitol in the ingredients of products, especially ones that advertise as sugar-free or low sugar.” The pet-proofing walkthrough covers where these things tend to live at nose height.
Cats, and why this page still sends you to the vet
Merck is unusually clear about cats: “Dogs are the only domestic species in which xylitol toxicosis has been reported; cats are not at risk for hypoglycemia or liver injury from xylitol toxicosis.”
That is a genuine negative finding and it deserves to be published, because it is exactly the sort of thing that gets lost when sites copy each other. It is also narrower than it first looks. It says cats are not at risk from xylitol. It says nothing about the rest of the product, and sugar-free gum, chewable medicines and supplements contain a great deal besides the sweetener.
So the tool above reports Merck’s statement to a cat owner and then still routes to the vet, because the tool knows what the sweetener does and has no idea what else was in the packet. That is not hedging. It is the accurate limit of what a lookup can tell you.
What we could not source
We could not find a published milligrams-per-piece figure for gum, mints or any other product from a source of this standard, for the reasons above.
We could not find a published minimum below which ingestion is considered inconsequential. Merck names a level above which hypoglycaemia has been associated and a level above which liver failure may develop. Neither is a floor.
We could not source any figure for species other than dogs and cats, and Merck’s wording covers domestic species generally rather than listing them.
We could not find, in the sources we read, an explanation of why the dog pancreas responds to xylitol when the human one does not. Merck describes the response without explaining the receptor biology behind it.
We could not source a single at-home step that helps, and there is nothing on this page about making a dog sick.
