Why this page exists, and what it is not
There is a great deal written about chocolate and dogs, and almost all of it is arithmetic. Weight of dog, type of chocolate, grams eaten, a threshold, a verdict. That arithmetic is not wrong in principle. It is wrong as something to do while standing in your kitchen holding a torn wrapper, because at that moment you almost never hold the four numbers it needs.
So this page does something different. It sets out what the published veterinary record actually shows about chocolate exposure in dogs: how often it happens, when it happens, what the dogs looked like when they arrived at a clinic, and how often the picture at home matched the picture that mattered. It is an evidence page. The calculation, where a calculation is appropriate at all, belongs on our chocolate toxicity checker, which carries the published thresholds together with the source and caveats that make them mean anything.
If what you want is the plain household answer to whether dogs can eat chocolate at all, and what happens in the ten minutes after you find the wrapper, that lives on can dogs eat chocolate. This page is the one underneath it: the studies, the numbers those studies actually produced, and the places where the record simply goes quiet.
The largest published look at this: 386 events across 229 UK practices
The best evidence on how chocolate exposure actually turns up in general practice comes from a surveillance study rather than from a poison centre. Noble, Newman, Wyatt, Radford and Jones published Heightened risk of canine chocolate exposure at Christmas and Easter in The Veterinary Record, volume 181 issue 25, on 20 December 2017. The data came from the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network, SAVSNET, drawing on electronic health records from 229 UK veterinary practices across 500 premises between November 2012 and May 2017.
The scale of the filtering is the first thing worth knowing. The authors searched 2.7 million consultation narratives. Of those, 1,722 mentioned chocolate. Of those mentions, only 386, or 22 per cent, from 375 individual animals, met the study’s definition of an actual exposure event. Four out of five times a vet typed the word chocolate, it was not a dog that had eaten chocolate. That is a useful reminder of how much noise sits between a search term and a fact.
Set 386 events against 2.7 million consultations and the picture changes shape. Chocolate exposure is real, it is seasonal, and it is not the everyday emergency the internet implies. It is also, in that dataset, overwhelmingly not fatal. None of that is a reason to be relaxed about a specific dog on a specific evening, and this page is not making that argument. It is a reason to distrust any source that reaches for alarm before it reaches for a denominator.
The seasonal finding, stated properly
This is the study’s headline, and it is usually reported badly. The authors found the odds of a chocolate exposure consultation were higher at Christmas, odds ratio 4.74, 95 per cent confidence interval 3.04 to 7.40, P less than 0.001, and higher at Easter, odds ratio 1.97, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.36 to 2.86, P less than 0.001, compared with the rest of the year.
Two things follow, and only two. First, the effect is real and it is large at Christmas: the confidence interval does not come close to 1. Second, an odds ratio is a statement about a population over five winters, not a prediction about your dog on 25 December. It tells you when to move the box off the low shelf. It tells you nothing about whether a particular dog that has eaten a particular thing is in trouble. Only your vet can address that, and the sooner they hear from you the more options they have.
The same paper reported that chocolate exposure was significantly less common in old dogs, odds ratio 0.42, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.31 to 0.56, P less than 0.001, relative to dogs under four years, with a weaker and non significant signal in middle aged dogs, odds ratio 0.77, P equals 0.058. And the finding that most breed pages quietly ignore: no breed was associated with an increased risk. This is a behaviour and opportunity problem, not a genetics problem. What the dogs actually looked like
This is the part of the record that most household articles skip, and it is the part that changes how you should think about the evening you are having.
In the SAVSNET dataset, among the 386 exposure events, vomiting was recorded in 17 per cent, neurological signs in 3 per cent, and a heart rate above 120 beats per minute in 7.5 per cent. Seizures were not reported in any case. That is a general practice population over five winters, and it is a far quieter picture than the one you will find on a page trying to frighten you.
Now put beside it a second study that looked at the same problem from the other end. Weingart and colleagues published Chocolate ingestion in dogs: 156 events in the Journal of Small Animal Practice in 2021, covering four years at a single institution and including only dogs whose owners had directly observed the ingestion. Of those 156 dogs, 44, or 28 per cent, arrived with clinical signs. 112, or 72 per cent, arrived with none at all.
Read that number slowly, because it is the single most important thing on this page. Nearly three quarters of dogs who had definitely eaten chocolate looked completely normal when they reached the clinic. A dog that looks fine is not evidence that a dog is fine. It is evidence that you are early. Absence of signs is a statement about the clock, not about the risk, and it is the reason “we watched him and he seemed all right” is the wrong plan rather than the cautious one. If your dog has eaten chocolate, the call to your vet is not something you make once symptoms appear. It is the thing that happens instead of waiting for symptoms.
Among the Weingart dogs that did show signs, the commonest were restlessness in 75 per cent, tremor in 50 per cent and vomiting in 48 per cent. The type of chocolate separated the two groups sharply: dogs without signs had mostly eaten milk chocolate, 54 per cent, while dogs with signs had mostly eaten dark or bitter chocolate, 64 per cent. One dog died, four hours after symptomatic treatment, having eaten dark chocolate twelve hours before presentation.
We are not going to turn any of that into a rule you can apply at home, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. Restlessness is not a diagnosis. Tremor in a dog is a reason to be on the phone to a vet immediately, not a reason to consult a chart. Why “he seems fine” carries so little information
The pharmacology explains the 72 per cent. The Merck Veterinary Manual, in its chapter on chocolate toxicosis in animals, last updated February 2026, gives two facts that between them dismantle the watch and wait plan.
The first is onset. Merck states that clinical signs of chocolate toxicosis usually occur within 6 to 12 hours after ingestion, and that in severe cases they may persist for up to 72 hours. If you found the wrapper twenty minutes ago, a normal looking dog tells you almost nothing, because you are sitting inside the window where a normal looking dog is exactly what the record predicts.
The second is elimination. Merck gives the half life of theobromine in dogs as 17.5 hours, and of caffeine as 4.5 hours. A seventeen and a half hour half life is a long time for a compound to be leaving the body. It is why this is not an incident with a ten minute verdict, and it is why a vet who hears from you early has more room to work with than one who hears from you at midnight.
Merck also describes the mechanism plainly: theobromine and caffeine are methylxanthines, and they competitively inhibit cellular adenosine receptors, which produces the central nervous system and cardiac effects that make this a clinical problem rather than a digestive one. The manual notes that theobromine is present at three to ten times the concentration of caffeine in chocolate, which is why theobromine is the compound that gets named.
The four unknowns, and why we send you to the checker
Every published chocolate threshold is expressed as an amount of methylxanthine per unit of the dog’s body weight. To use one, four quantities have to be known at the same time. In practice, at the moment it matters, most households know one or two of them.
The first is the dog’s current weight. Not the weight on the vaccination card from last spring, and not an estimate from lifting him. The second is how much chocolate was actually eaten, as distinct from how much is missing from the box, which is not the same number once you account for what rolled under the sofa. The third is what kind of chocolate it was, and the fourth is how much methylxanthine that particular product contained.
That fourth one is where home arithmetic quietly falls apart. Merck’s own reference table spans more than two orders of magnitude between white chocolate at the bottom and cocoa powder at the top. We are deliberately not reprinting those concentrations here, for the same reason we do not reprint any threshold on a general reading page: a number of that consequence needs to sit next to its source, its species, its units and its caveats, or it becomes a licence to guess. And note what the packet does not tell you. Cocoa solids percentage is a recipe statement, not an assay. Two bars printed with the same percentage can differ in theobromine content, because bean origin, roast and processing all move it. Nothing on a wrapper in a British supermarket declares methylxanthine content. So the fourth quantity, the one the arithmetic is most sensitive to, is not merely unknown to you. It is not printed anywhere in your house.
This is the honest case for a tool rather than a paragraph. The checker cannot invent the numbers you do not have, but it can hold the published thresholds correctly, keep the units straight, and be explicit about which of your inputs is doing the work. What it produces is not a verdict and is not permission to stay home. It is a better sentence to say to your vet.
Which of these do you actually know right now?
Tick each one you could state out loud, accurately, this minute. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. This is a thinking aid, not an assessment.
Good. Say it to your vet in kilograms and say when it was last measured. Rare, and valuable. Keep the wrapper and the box. Your vet will want the packaging itself. Useful. Read the product name off the wrapper rather than describing it from memory. Almost nobody can tick this, because it is not printed on the packet. This is the unknown the arithmetic is most sensitive to. The clock matters more than almost anything else here. Write the time down now, before you forget it. Chocolate is often not the only thing in the packet, and sometimes not the most urgent thing. Tell your vet what else was in there.However many you ticked, the next step is the same one: phone your vet. If you ticked fewer than four, that is not a failure. It is the normal state of a household five minutes after this happens, and it is precisely why the decision is not yours to compute.

The things that come with the chocolate
A recurring pattern in poisoning cases is that the named substance was not the only one, and occasionally not the important one. Chocolate arrives inside things: selection boxes, baking cupboards, gift hampers, advent calendars, cake.
Raisins and sultanas turn up in fruit and nut bars, in panettone, in chocolate covered fruit. The record on grapes and their dried forms is genuinely different in character from the record on chocolate, and it is unusually unsettled: Cornell University's Riney Canine Health Center states plainly that the exact toxic dose or number of ingested grapes that can cause harm is not entirely known, and that sensitivity differs between dogs. Sugar free chocolate and sugar free baking products may contain xylitol, which is a separate problem with a separate literature and a different urgency profile. That has its own page and its own tool at the xylitol checker. Macadamias appear in premium chocolate. Coffee beans appear in dark chocolate, which is why coffee has a page of its own. Foil, plastic trays and wooden skewers are a mechanical problem rather than a chemical one, and again, not one to assess at home.

Cats, and everyone else in the house
Merck notes that chocolate poisoning occurs most commonly in dogs, though many species are susceptible, and attributes the difference largely to how indiscriminately dogs eat rather than to any protective difference in cats. Cats are not immune. They are simply fussier, and a cat that has eaten chocolate is unusual enough that it deserves a phone call rather than a search engine. Rabbits, and the other small animals in the house, are outside the published record almost entirely. We could find no comparable case series for them, and rather than extrapolate from dogs we will say so.
Prevention is a storage problem, not a knowledge problem
The SAVSNET finding that no breed carried an increased risk, and that exposure was less common in older dogs, points at the same conclusion from two directions. This is about access and about a young dog's willingness to try anything. Neither is fixed by knowing more about theobromine.
What changes the risk is where the box lives in December, whether the advent calendar is at nose height, whether guests know that the dog is not to be given anything, and whether the baking cupboard shuts. Height is the cheapest intervention available and the one most households skip, because the chocolate is only out for a fortnight and a fortnight is exactly when the odds ratio is 4.74. The second half of prevention is preparation for the evening when it happens anyway. That means the out of hours number written down somewhere that does not require a charged phone to find, and the practice details in one place. Finding an open clinic at eleven at night is a much worse task than finding one at four in the afternoon, which is the case for doing it now through the emergency vet finder.
What the published record does not tell us
This section is here because leaving a gap unmarked is how a confident wrong number gets born. Each of the following was looked for on 5 August 2026 and not found in a form we were willing to publish.
- No UK figure for how many chocolate exposures never reach a vet at all. Both studies here count dogs that were presented. The denominator of dogs whose owners decided to wait is unmeasured, and it is probably the larger group. Every proportion on this page should be read as conditional on somebody having made the call.
- No case fatality rate we would state as a rate. The Weingart series records one death among 156 observed ingestions. One event is not a rate, and we will not turn it into a percentage that reads like a population risk.
- No methylxanthine declaration on retail chocolate packaging. Cocoa solids percentage is not a substitute, and we found no UK labelling requirement that would make it one.
- No comparable published case series for cats. The literature is dog shaped. We are not going to infer a feline picture from a canine one.
- No case series at all for rabbits or other small pets. Named here rather than filled with an estimate.
- No published UK data on how accurate owner estimates of the amount eaten actually are. This is the assumption every home calculation rests on, and as far as we can find, nobody has measured it.
