Temperament and personality

Ragdolls are the gentle giants of the cat fancy — large, placid and exceptionally affectionate. They are famous for their relaxed, trusting nature, and many genuinely go floppy when held, which is how the breed got its name. Ragdolls are people-oriented and “dog-like”: they often greet you at the door, follow you from room to room, and flop down beside you. They are typically soft-voiced, easygoing and superb with children and other pets.

Living with a gentle giant

Their calm, sociable nature makes Ragdolls wonderful companions, but it comes with a responsibility: they are trusting and not very streetwise, so they are best kept as indoor cats (or with secure outdoor access) for their safety. They love company and can be lonely if left alone for long, so a household that is often home, or a feline friend, suits them well.

Grooming the silky coat

Ragdolls have a soft, semi-long, plush coat that, helpfully, lacks much undercoat — so it mats less than a Persian’s. Still, brushing a few times a week keeps it silky, reduces hairballs and removes loose fur, with extra attention during seasonal sheds. Otherwise they need standard care: dental hygiene, nail trims and a big, sturdy litter tray.

Health and lifespan

Ragdolls are generally healthy and long-lived (often into their mid-teens), but the breed has a known predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), for which responsible breeders DNA-test, as well as some risk of bladder stones and kidney issues. Keep them at a healthy weight, maintain dental care and routine vet checks, and keep lilies and unsafe foods away.

Is a Ragdoll right for you?

Ragdolls suit people who want an affectionate, gentle, easygoing companion and can offer plenty of company and a safe indoor life. They are ideal for families, calmer households and anyone who dreams of a cat that actually wants to be cuddled. Give a Ragdoll love, brushing and safety, and you will have one of the sweetest, most devoted cats around.
