Can Guinea Pigs Eat It - Vitamin C and What Actually Fails

A guinea pig that has stopped eating needs to be seen the same day. So does one that has become reluctant to move.
The honest answer to almost every can a guinea pig eat this question is that the food is rarely the interesting part. One species specific fact reorganises the whole subject, and once you have it, most of the individual questions answer themselves.
The enzyme that is missing
Merck states it flatly: "Guinea pigs lack L-gulonolactone oxidase, which is involved in the synthesis of ascorbic acid from glucose." Read 4 August 2026.
Most mammals manufacture their own vitamin C internally, from glucose, through a short chain of enzymatic steps. The guinea pig is missing the last enzyme in that chain. Humans and other primates are missing it too, which is why scurvy is a word in our history and not in a dog's.
So vitamin C is not a nutritional bonus for a guinea pig. It is a requirement in the same category as water. An animal that is eating enthusiastically and looking well can still be running down a store it has no way to replace.
Where this page stops. We will not tell you what to give, in what form, or how much. Both of our sources discuss routes of supplementation and both attach figures. We have read those figures and we are not reproducing them, because a number transcribed from a reference and applied to a particular animal without a professional in the loop is exactly the sort of thing that goes wrong quietly. Ask your vet, and ask about your guinea pig rather than about guinea pigs.
What deficiency looks like, which is not what people expect
Ask most people to describe a vitamin deficiency and you will get something vague and gradual. The published description is far more specific, and considerably more physical.
Merck lists the signs as "anorexia or difficulty prehending food, a rough coat, lameness or paresis, swollen joints, generalized pain, and delayed wound healing". Read 4 August 2026.
Read that list again alongside the mechanism, which makes it coherent rather than random. Merck explains: "A lack of vitamin C leads to defective type IV collagen, laminin, and elastin. This leads to compromised blood vessels and resulting hemorrhage, and ultimately periarticular hemorrhage and decreased joint integrity."
Collagen is the structural protein holding connective tissue together, and vitamin C is required to build it properly. Remove it and the scaffolding degrades everywhere at once. Blood vessel walls weaken and leak, which is the haemorrhage. Bleeding around joints is why they swell and why the animal hurts and stops moving. Wounds fail to close because closing a wound is a collagen job.
Then there is the detail that catches households out completely. Merck notes that "malocclusion can also occur as a result of a lack of collagen to anchor teeth appropriately", and separately that dental overgrowth is "typically related to malnutrition, such as hypovitaminosis C, a lack of fiber in the diet, or other deficits in husbandry".
A guinea pig can therefore arrive at a vet with a dental problem that is really a nutrition problem, and be treated at the wrong end of the causal chain.

Some animals run out faster
Merck adds a qualifier that matters if your circumstances have recently changed: "Growing, lactating, pregnant, and diseased guinea pigs have higher requirements for vitamin C and can show clinical signs of deficiency more rapidly than healthy counterparts." Read 4 August 2026.
The last of those categories is the one to dwell on. Diseased means an animal already unwell for some other reason is simultaneously burning through the thing it cannot make. Illness and deficiency reinforce one another, and the animal least able to tell you about it is the one furthest along.
Who Merck says runs down faster
Relative, not quantitative. Merck names these four groups as having higher requirements and as showing signs more rapidly. It does not rank them against each other, and neither do we.
The water bottle question, where both sources agree
Adding vitamin C to the drinking water is the commonest household approach, and both of our sources advise against it, for two different and equally practical reasons.
Merck: "Supplementation of vitamin C in the water is not recommended because it requires frequent changing and can give an unappealing flavor to the water, which could lead to a decrease in water intake." Read 4 August 2026.
VCA makes the same point from the other side, noting that the vitamin degrades quickly in liquid and that giving it directly by mouth is preferred. Read 4 August 2026.
Taken together, the objection is that water dosing fails twice over. The vitamin decays, so the animal receives less than intended. And the taste may put the animal off drinking, so it also takes in less water than it should. A method that quietly reduces both the supplement and the hydration is worse than doing nothing carefully.
VCA also warns that the vitamin C in pellets breaks down or loses potency over time after manufacture. That turns a storage habit into a nutritional one. A large bag used slowly is not the same food at the end as it was at the start.
Hay, and why a poorly digestible diet is the correct one
Merck describes guinea pigs as obligate herbivores and hindgut fermenters requiring "a high-fiber, low-nutrient, poorly digestible diet". Read 4 August 2026. That reads like a criticism and is in fact a specification.
VCA puts the same point in terms of what hay does: "Hay is critical not only to help wear down their continuously growing teeth, but also to keep the bacteria in their intestinal tract healthy and functional." Read 4 August 2026.
Two systems therefore depend on one material. The teeth grow continuously and are worn down by chewing coarse fibre, so a soft diet produces dental disease rather than merely being less good. And the gut runs on a bacterial population that needs fibre delivered without interruption. Fruit, sugar and the diarrhoea risk
VCA limits fruit because of its sugar content, which it says can cause an imbalance in intestinal bacteria and potentially dangerous diarrhoea. Read 4 August 2026. Merck separately advises against other fruits, carrots and sugary treats, and notes the importance of a varied produce intake for urinary tract health.
The named mechanism is the one that makes bread a serious problem for rabbits: sugar and starch arriving in a hindgut built for fibre, and feeding the wrong bacteria. Guinea pigs and rabbits are not the same animal and should not be fed as though they were, but the shape of that particular failure is shared.
Neophobia, the trait nobody warns you about
VCA notes that "sudden changes can result in a refusal to eat", that guinea pigs develop food preferences early and do not adapt easily to dietary shifts. Read 4 August 2026.
This is genuinely unusual, and it has an uncomfortable implication. A guinea pig never offered vegetables may refuse them as an adult, which means the correct diet is partly a decision made for the animal before you met it. It also means any change you are contemplating is a slower and more careful project than it would be with a dog, and that a refusal to eat is not stubbornness to be waited out. In an animal that cannot make vitamin C and needs fibre continuously, a hunger strike is a clinical event.
Which is why we will not give you a transition plan. Ask a vet, and tell them what the animal currently accepts.
Which produce the sources name
Merck names red and green bell peppers, tomatoes, kale, parsley, beet greens and spinach as produce high in vitamin C, and describes a diet built on grass based hay with species appropriate pellets and vegetables including leafy greens, bell peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. Read 4 August 2026.
We reproduce that as a description of what a veterinary reference names, not as a shopping list. No amounts, no frequencies, no combinations. Guinea pigs also have urinary considerations around calcium that the same source touches on, and balancing those against vitamin C content is precisely the judgement that needs a professional rather than a web page.
What we could not source
- Any food outside those named. If a food is not on the lists above, our sources did not address it and this page cannot help with it.
- Fruit specifics. VCA says only certain fruits are recommended occasionally, without a list we could reproduce reliably.
- How quickly scurvy develops. Merck says the higher requirement groups show signs more rapidly. It gives no interval for any group, and we are not inventing one.
- Whether a good pellet alone is sufficient. Neither source stated it in a form we could quote without attaching a figure.
- Grass, weeds and garden foraging. Not addressed. Note that our plant pages repeatedly found no small mammal data at all, so a garden is a poor place to improvise.
- Water hardness and calcium. Raised implicitly by the urinary material, addressed by neither source.

Questions people actually ask
Mine eats well and looks fine. Do I still need to think about vitamin C?
Yes, because appetite is not a signal for this. There is no internal production to fall back on, so intake and status are the same thing. Merck also lists delayed wound healing and a rough coat among the signs, which are exactly the sort of thing a household notices late and attributes to something else.
Is a guinea pig basically a small rabbit?
No, and treating it as one is a real error. They share hindgut fermentation and a dependence on long fibre, which is why the hay argument reads the same. They differ on the point that dominates this page: a rabbit makes its own vitamin C and a guinea pig cannot. Feed a guinea pig like a rabbit and you will get the fibre right and the vitamin wrong.
Can I just buy a supplement?
We are not going to answer that, and the refusal is deliberate rather than evasive. Form, route, frequency and amount all matter, both sources discuss them, and both attach figures we will not reproduce. This is a five minute question for a vet and a bad question for a search engine.
My guinea pig has dental problems. Is that a food issue?
It may be. Merck links malocclusion both to a lack of collagen from vitamin C deficiency and to a lack of fibre, and describes overgrowth as typically related to malnutrition or husbandry. That is a good reason to raise diet at a dental appointment rather than treating the two as separate subjects.
What about houseplants near the cage?
A fair question with an unsatisfying answer. Across our plant pages we found consistently that the major sources give dog and cat data and say little or nothing about small mammals. That absence is not reassurance. Keep plants out of reach and ask a vet rather than reasoning from a dog entry.
