Can Rabbits Eat Lettuce?

Sometimes — with care

Dark leafy lettuces (romaine, lamb’s lettuce, red leaf) are great for rabbits. Iceberg lettuce is the trap: watery, nutrition-free and capable of causing diarrhoea.

The details: why this verdict

Romaine and other dark lettuces provide fibre, water and vitamins, and can be part of the daily greens rotation every rabbit needs. Iceberg is the exception for two reasons: it’s nutritionally empty (96% water) so it displaces better food, and its high water and lactucarium content can cause diarrhoea in rabbits — a genuinely dangerous condition for them, since rabbit digestion depends on stable gut flora. Always introduce any new green gradually over a week.

How much is okay?

A generous handful of dark leafy lettuce daily is fine as part of a mixed greens plate (about 1 packed cup of greens per kg of rabbit per day). Iceberg: none. Wash everything — pesticide residues hit a 2 kg body hard.

Symptoms to watch for

Safer alternatives

Rotate romaine with coriander, basil, dill, mint and parsley for a varied greens plate.
