Can Rabbits Eat Bananas?

Sometimes — with care

Rabbits go wild for banana — which is exactly the problem. It’s one of the sugariest fruits, so a thin slice once or twice a week is the ceiling.

The details: why this verdict

Banana is the rabbit equivalent of chocolate cake: adored, energy-dense, and habit-forming — many rabbits will refuse hay while “negotiating” for banana, and hay refusal is dangerous because constant fibre intake is what keeps rabbit digestion moving. Sugar disrupts cecal fermentation, and bananas pack ~12% sugar plus starch. The peel is technically edible but pesticide-laden unless organic, and not worth it.

How much is okay?

A slice the width of a euro coin, 1–2 times a week for an adult rabbit, counted within the total fruit allowance. None for rabbits under 12 weeks, dieting rabbits or any rabbit with gut sensitivity. Pro tip: feed banana from your hand and your rabbit will love you forever — but it won’t respect the hay after.
