Can Dogs Eat Bread?

Sometimes — with care

Plain baked bread is safe in small bites — but raw bread dough is a genuine emergency, and raisin, garlic or chocolate breads are toxic. Know the difference.

The details: why this verdict

A bite of plain white or wheat bread won’t harm most dogs; it’s just empty calories. The real dangers wear a bread costume: raw yeast dough expands in the warm stomach and ferments, producing ethanol — simultaneously a bloat risk and alcohol poisoning; raisin bread carries the grape/raisin kidney-failure risk; garlic bread is an allium delivery vehicle; and banana bread or other sweet loaves may contain xylitol or chocolate chips.

How much is okay?

An occasional crust or small piece of plain bread is fine for a healthy dog. If your dog ate rising dough from the counter, call an emergency vet immediately — do not wait for symptoms. Same for any amount of raisin bread.

Safer alternatives

For chewy snacks, dental chews sized for your dog or a frozen carrot are far more useful.
