Can Rabbits Eat Strawberries?

Sometimes — with care

Strawberries are a safe occasional treat for rabbits — emphasis on occasional. Like all fruit they’re sugary, so think a small piece now and then, not a daily snack.

The details: why this verdict

Rabbits enjoy the sweetness of strawberries, and a little is harmless and even provides some vitamin C and antioxidants. But a rabbit’s digestion runs on fibre, and sugar disrupts the delicate balance of gut bacteria, which can lead to soft stools and, in excess, serious slowdowns of the gut. So strawberries sit firmly in the “treat” category, like sweets for a child — lovely in small amounts, a problem in large ones. The leafy green tops are actually a healthy bonus rabbits can have more freely.

How much is okay?

A small piece of strawberry (or a strawberry top) once or twice a week, counted within the overall fruit allowance of 1–2 tablespoons per 2 kg per week. None for baby rabbits under 12 weeks or rabbits prone to soft stools. Always with unlimited hay.

Safer alternatives

The green tops and fresh herbs make lower-sugar “treats”; a sliver of apple rotates well.
